Norfolk Tides News Release

Eli Whiteside drove home two runs with a second inning double, lifting the Tides to a 3-2 win over the Charlotte Knights Saturday night from Harbor Park.

Whiteside's double came off of Charlotte starter Corwin Malone (0-1), and helped the Tides win the opening game of the two-game series. Terry Tiffee led off the decisive frame with a single to left, and advanced to second on a walk to Brandon Fahey. After a groundout by Luis Montanez advanced the runners up a base, Whiteside lined an offering from Malone high off the wall in left field, giving the Tides a 2-0 lead.

Norfolk extended their lead to 3-0 in the third on an RBI groundout by Tiffee, and Norfolk's staff made the margin hold up.

Charlotte rallied with two runs in the fourth inning on an RBI double by Brian Anderson and an RBI single by Wiki Gonzalez, but Norfolk's pitchers clamped down and held the Knights scoreless the rest of the game. €

Jim Johnson (1-1) allowed just the two fourth inning runs in the contest en route to picking up his first win of 2007. The 23-year-old right-hander allowed six hits and one walk while striking out five.

Andy Mitchell followed Johnson with 3.0 innings of shutout relief, while Cory Doyne worked around a one-out single in the 9th inning to record his 6th save of the year.

Norfolk ends their six-game homestand with a 1:15 contest Sunday afternoon against the Knights. Rob Bell (1-0, 0.00) takes the hill for the Tides against Charlotte Shaun Babula (0-0, 3.52).
