Plymouth Whalers News Release
PLYMOUTH, MI -- People all over America will enjoy a traditional turkey dinner tomorrow during Thanksgiving. There was no turkey tonight during the Plymouth Whalers' annual pre-Thanksgiving game, just a dandy of a game won the Windsor Spitfires, 2-1, before 2,983 fans at Compuware Arena.
The Spitfires haven't lost in regulation since Oct. 11 and currently stand at 22-3-0-3. Windsor is the top team in the Ontario Hockey League and the top team in the Canadian Hockey League.
Plymouth is now 14-12-0-0.
All the scoring came in the first period. Windsor took a 1-0 lead on goals Richard Panik's seventh of the year at 6:22. He intercepted a loose puck at the Windsor blue, skated through center into the Plymouth zone, and beat Plymouth goaltender Matt Hackett with a shot, five-hole. Spits scored the eventual game-winner at 10:07 on a deflection by Scott Timmins, who scored his 15th goals of the season, redirecting Ryan Ellis' low shot from the left point past Hackett at the hash marks.
Plymouth came back 0:50 seconds later to cut the Windsor lead to 2-1 on Josh Brittain's ninth goal of the year. Brittain's linemates - Tyler Seguin and newcomer Robbie Czarnik (making his Whalers debut) - teamed up to find Brittain on the right wing and he made no mistake with a back hand shot.
The goaltenders took over from the point, with Windsor goaltender and first star Troy Passingham stopping 37-of-38 and Hackett stopping 43-of-45 shots as the game's second star.
Plymouth plays in Sault Ste. Marie on Friday before returning home Saturday to host Kingston at 7:05pm. It's United Way Can Food Drive Night. Help us stock The Salvation Army Food Pantry!
For every 10 nonperishable items fans bring to the game on Saturday, they'll get a raffle ticket for a chance to win a $500 Shopping Spree at Twelve Oaks Mall.
