New Haven County Cutters News Release

Got home run power? Now is the time to show off that swing. On Saturday, May 21, the New Haven County Cutters are giving male fans 16 and older a chance to swing for the fences at Yale Field. Individual participants and teams of five are welcomed to see if they have what it takes to knock one out of the ballpark.

If hitting monstrous home runs is asking too much of some contestants, prizes will be given out to those who hit the balls in specially placed targets around the field.

"The Home Run Derby is a program that has worked in other markets and appeals to both baseball and softball players," said Stephen Colvin, Director of Promotions and Special Events. "Even if you can't hit it out of the park, there will be nine 15-foot targets for points and prizes."

Each batter will get 10 outs. Any ball that is hit but is not a home run will be considered an out. Any pitch to a batter that is neither hit or swung at that is deemed a strike will be considered an out (within reason). Only game-legal bats, either aluminum or wood, will be allowed and must be supplied by the participant.

The team with the highest point total will be crowned Home Run Derby champions and be awarded a night in a Cutters luxury suite for a home game. The top five individual hitters (most home runs in one registered at bat) will return for a final round on June 19 (Sunday afternoon) and compete in a five-pitch swing-off prior to the Cutters' game to determine the premier slugger of the competition.

The derby, which is sponsored by Clear Channel radio stations KC101, WELI, and WAVZ, will have an entry fee of $25 per participant and $125 for each team of five. Participants will receive a Home Run Derby T-shirt along with having their name on the scoreboard and receive a team picture. A portion of proceeds will benefit the Ronald McDonald House.

Contestants under 18 must have a signed parental or guardian permission slip. Complete rules and regulations can be found at www.CuttersBaseball.com or by contacting (203) 777-5636 ext. 20 or scolvin@cuttersbaseball.com

The Cutters' home opener, including fireworks, is on Memorial Day, May 30, at 6:05 p.m. against the Bangor Lumberjacks. Season and group tickets are available at Yale Field or by calling 203 777-5636. Information also may be obtained at www.CuttersBaseball.com.
