Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

The Waterloo Black Hawks did all their scoring in a span of less than five minutes Saturday, then held on for a 3-2 season-opening victory against the Chicago Steel at The Edge Ice Arena.

Waterloo's offense clicked early and often in the opening minutes of the second period following a scoreless first. Liam Pecararo redirected a centering feed by Brandon Montour past the right skate of Chris Nell 1:20 after intermission. Less than five minutes later, Montour sprang Pecararo for breakaway goal following a big save by Cal Petersen. Just another 31 seconds elapsed before Brandon Salerno's shot caromed off a defender, giving Waterloo a 3-0 lead and Montour his third assist of the game. Chicago took a time out and drew back within two on a Patrick Polino tally at 10:11.

The Steel made it exciting in the third. Alec Vanko scored on a deflected shot which caromed in off of a Waterloo defender just 1:15 into the final period. The remaining time was played at a frantic pace, but neither team could score again. Petersen stopped 26 shots in the win, while Nell turned away 38.

Follow Saturday's trip, the Black Hawks play four of their next six games at Young Arena, beginning with the home opener versus the Dubuque Fighting Saints on Friday, September 27th. The first 2,500 fans in attendance that evening will receive a Hawks magnetic schedule courtesy of Lincoln Savings Bank.
