Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release
(Vero Beach, FL) â For the Vero Beach Dodgers, the third time was not a charm. For the third time this season, the Dodger pitching staff took a no-hitter into the eighth inning, and for the third time, it was lost in the latter innings. CF Danny Rombley led off the ninth inning with a single off of LHP Jamaal Hamilton, who had relieved LHP Mike Megrew an inning earlier. Brevard County would go on to put up two runs in the ninth, but the Dodgers held on for the 8-2 victory.
For the second time this season, Megrew threw seven no-hit innings before leaving the ballgame. The last time was against Tampa on May 19th, with that no-hitter being broken up on the first batter after he left the game. Megrew finished the night with the seven no-hit frames, allowing three walks and four strike outs to improve to 5-3 on the year.
The Dodgers got on the board in the third inning when 2B Delwyn Young singled home a pair of runs, making it 2-0. They would add three more unearned runs in the fifth inning on a couple of RBI groundouts, thanks to a pair of Brevard County errors. They would finish the evening with a total of five errors.
Vero Beach would tack on three more runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach as 1B Trey Dyson had a two-out RBI single, followed by a two-run double by RF Matt Kemp.
Brevard County RHP Justin Echols tossed six innings, allowing five runs, only two earned, but fell to 0-5 with the loss.
The Dodgers will attempt to make it four wins in a row Wednesday night when they take on Brevard County for a pair, starting at 5:00 PM. The first game will complete the suspended game from last week that saw the Manatees take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first before the rains came.
