LOVES PARK, Ill. - On Wednesday, the Northern Illinois University Huskies play Northwestern University at Road Ranger Stadium, which happens to be the home of the Rockford RiverHawks. But while coach Ed Mathey has his sights set on leaving his mark at the home of the RiverHawks, he also has his sights set on his recruiting class of 2015 and another type of RiverHawk.
Satchel Daleo, a 13-year-old outfielder who plays for the Junior RiverHawks, has verbally committed to play for the Huskies when he gets to college. Daleo's current club is sponsored by the professional team, and wears identical uniforms.
Satchel's father, Chris Daleo, spoke to Mathey by phoneFriday.The coach told him he'd like to have the boy make a verbal commitment to come to NIU. The boy's answer, according to his father, was "Absolutely."
"Ed saw him play during fall ball last year and then Satchel was invited to participate in a showcase held at NIU, where he performed well," Chris Daleo said."We are very excited.It is Satchel's dream to play college baseball. We respect Coach Mathey and his program at NIU and this is very exciting news for our family."NCAA rules prohibit coaches and school officials from speaking publicly about unsigned prospects."Satchel continuesto show progression withthe contact points of his swing," RiverHawks player-coach Rich Austin said. "Hedisplays a strong work ethic and absorbs things very well."
Austin, Satchel Daleo's hitting coach, is helping the young prospect prepare not only for his season but also for the Chicagoland Elite Showcase, the USANationalteam tryouts and a tournament to be held inArubain the fall.Daleo previously representedthe Great Lakes Region,made up of players from six states,at theUSA Baseball Complex in Cary, N.C.,in the National Team Identification Series last September.He also spenthis Christmas breakrepresenting the United States in the Dominican Republic.
