NJ/NY Gotham FC News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - NJ/NY Gotham FC is set to face off against the Portland Thorns FC at Providence Park on Wednesday night in midweek NWSL action. The match will be presented digitally to Gotham FC fans by Avaya. Kickoff is set for 10:30 p.m. ET, and the match will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network (U.S.) and streamed on Twitch (international).
Gotham FC is coming into Wednesday's match off a tough 2-3 loss against OL Reign last Saturday night at Cheney Stadium. After taking an early lead on a brace from Ifeoma Onumonu, OL Reign stormed from behind to score three unanswered second half goals, including two penalties converted by Megan Rapinoe, to hand Gotham FC its first loss on the road of the season.
In an efficient outing, all three of Onumonu's shots on the night were on frame, two of which found the back of the net within the first 15 minutes of the match. Her offensive efforts earned her Budweiser Player of the Match honors for the third time this season. With the two goals, Onumonu has now recorded seven goals on the season and leads the way for Gotham FC and shares the top spot on the league leaderboard with Washington Spirit's Ashley Hatch and Orlando Pride's Sydney Leroux.
The Portland Thorns enter Wednesday's match with a 2-2 draw against the Houston Dash during their last NWSL match and a 1-0 win over Olympique Lyonnais to win the Women's International Championship Cup. Morgan Weaver was the lone goal scorer in the Women's ICC final with a late game-winner in the 87th minute just five minutes after entering the match.
This match will be the fourth time these two teams face off this season. Their last encounter was on July 11 also at Providence Park where the game ended in a scoreless draw.
Following Wednesday's match, Gotham FC will return home to Red Bull Arena on Sunday, August 29, to take on the visiting Orlando Pride on Olympic Return Night. Join Gotham FC as we welcome back Olympians Carli Lloyd, Kailen Sheridan, and Evelyne Viens. Following that match, the team will remain at home to face the Chicago Red Stars at Red Bull Arena on Saturday, September 4.
