New Britain, Conn. - The Somerset Patriots (10-4) were down to their final strike Thursday Night before a ninth-inning rally lifted them to a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over the New Britain Bees (4-9) in the series-finale at New Britain Stadium. With the win, Somerset completed a four-game sweep over New Britain.
New Britain took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI groundout from Craig Maddox. The Bees added a second run on a Conor Bierfeldt RBI double in the last of the seventh.
The Patriots rallied for three-runs in the top of the ninth inning off Bees' closer Joe Beimel. Yovan Gonzalez began the scoring with an RBI single before Darren Ford's two-strike, two-out, two-run double to left-center field scored Justin Pacchioli and Scott Kelly to give Somerset the lead.
"[New Britain] did a good job of keeping us down and frustrating our hitters throughout the ballgame, but it is never over until it is over," said Somerset Patriots manager Brett Jodie. "We preach that every game is unique, so we were able to get out there, have a great ninth inning and push those three runs across for a big win."
Neither starting pitcher factored into the decision. Patriots' starting pitcher Aaron Laffey allowed two runs over seven innings on five hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Bees' starter Brian Dupra tossed 5.1 scoreless innings on three hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
Alex Gouin (2-0) earned the win after a scoreless inning of relief. Biemel (0-2) suffered the loss after allowing three runs on three hits and one walk in 1.1 innings.
Somerset returns home Friday, May 5th to open up a three-game series against the York Revolution. Patriots' righty Lucas Irvine (0-0, 2.79 ERA) takes on Revolution right-hander Victor Mateo (0-1, 1.68 ERA).
