Ninth Inning Heartbreak Strikes Again, Swamp Bats fall to Laconia, 2-1

Keene Swamp Bats News Release

The Keene Swamp Bats dropped another heartbreaker on Thursday night, this one by a score of 2-1 at the hands of the Laconia Muskrats.

The Swamp Bats are now 13-15 on the season, while Laconia improves to 14-14.

Joey Bielek (Arizona State) drew a walkoff bases loaded walk issued by Alex Robinson (Maryland) on a very, very close 3-2 pitch that scored Matt Byrne (Iona) and the Muskrats came from behind and captured a 2-1 win.

Vinny Zarrillo (Rutgers) led off the bottom of the ninth with a double down the right field line and came around to score on a bunt single by Byrne. The throw from Keene's David Sosebee (Georgia) appeared to have hit Byrne in the back and no Swamp Bats could find the ball for a moment, allowing Zarrillo to score the tying run.

Sosebee pitched eight plus strong innings, but was charged with the loss as he allowed two runs on seven hits, walked one and struck out six.

The Swamp Bats took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth with a leadoff solo shot to dead centerfield from Alex Liquori (Kennesaw State), his second of the season.

Keene had their chances to add an insurance run, but left eight men on base and were unable to push one across against Laconia reliever Jordan Sheffield (Vanderbilt).

Sheffield earned the win, his first of the season, by working the final three innings and not allowing a hit or a run to go along with five strikeouts.

Jason Carmichael (Florida) started the game for the Muskrats and went six innings, allowing one run on seven hits, walked one and fanned six.

Both teams had seven hits in the game. Ryan Summers paced the Swamp Bats, going 2-4 with three stolen bases on the night.

Keene will return home and host the Vermont Mountaineers at 6:30 p.m. at Alumni Field. Dominic Severino (Central Conn State) will get the start for the Swamp Bats.
