Quad City Steamwheelers News Release

As you already know, the Steamwheelers are hosting a benefit this coming Monday night (December 3) for Nijah Peters, the daughter of 'Wheeler Wide Receiver Kris Peters. Nijah is only 8-years old and needs to undergo reconstructive surgery in order to regain the full use of her right arm. She currently resides in Kansas City, MO. Kris Peters, who has signed to play with the Steamwheelers again in 2008, still lives in the area and spent the fall coaching high school football.

The details of the dinner and trivia contest are spelled out below. In the two weeks since announcing the event, the Steamwheelers have received a number of calls from individuals and organizations offering to provide assistance. One group in particular, the Shriners, have offered to provide the orthopaedic and medical care at their hospital in St. Louis. Kris and the team's front office have been working out the details in order for this to happen.

The Kaaba Shriners in the Quad Cities have assisted over 130 area children in this way. A representative of the local temple will be at the event on Monday night to represent the assistance the Ararat Shrine Temple in Kansas City will be providing. The Kansas City-based Shriners have had a number of notable members including Harry S. Truman.

While covering the medical costs are a significant portion of the costs, there is still a need to raise enough money to cover the ancillary expenses associated with the procedure and rehab Nijah will undergo following her surgery. Several items have been donated from local businesses for a charity auction including a computer from Neo Computers, fitness memberships and a vacation package.
