Maryland NightHawks News Release
Upper Marlboro, MD. Clutch outside shooting from Nighthawks' guards Randy "White Chocolate" Gill and Brian Chase overcame 22 turnovers in leading Maryland to a crucial 106-103 victory over division rival Harlem last night at Show Place Arena.
The game was a see-saw battle with neither team ever leading by more than 9 points. When falling behind 19-10 early in the game, guard Randy Gill kept the Nighthawks in the game with 3 early three-pointers. "It wasn't pretty at times, but we just found a way to win," explained Gill, whose 15 first half points enabled Maryland to lead 50-49 at halftime.
After missing the previous game with an ankle injury, Maryland center Kevin Robinson came back strong scoring 20 points and grabbing 18 rebounds and blocking 5 shots. His strong inside play enabled Gill and Chase to continue their hot outside shooting in the second, as the two combined for 6-11 shooting from 3-point land in the second half. Gill finished the game with 22 points, and Chase finished with 21 and also grabbed 7 rebounds.
Harlem never seemed to go away in the second half as their balanced scoring attach was led by center Courtney Fields who socred 21 points and grabbed 19 rebounds. Guards D'Quarrius Stewart and Tobe Carberry scored 21 and 20 points respectively. Close games like this one are particularly significant as "point differential" is a crucial consideration of playoff potential as well as victories. It was a great game. Maryland's record now stands at 6-3.
