Crush on a Seven Game Winning Streak
December 20, 2004 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Maywood Buzz News Release
The Orange County Crush basketball team trampled over the Long Beach Jam, Sunday afternoon, with a decisive victory of 142 to 110. The Jam was no match for the great defense and shooting ability of the OC Crush. Derrick Dial and Fred Vinson controlled all scores with 27 points each. Juaquin Hawkins had 24, Damian Cantrell had 16, and Jerry Dupree popped in a total of 15 points. Damian Cantrell snatched 15 rebounds and Sean Rooks had a total of 10.
The recent release of Dennis Rodman and the unfortunate backlash of a ticket service charge fiasco have failed to damper the organizational management and the team play of the OC Crush.
The Orange County Crush Basketball team is on a winning streak. The team has won seven games straight in their quest for an ABA Championship. Who would believe that a team with such stature has not been recognized or embraced by the community it's a part of? According to the team's owners, a multitude of effort has been poured into building a much needed sponsorship base for the team. For some unknown reason, the major businesses and the community within Orange County still aren't responding or supporting the team. The owners do appreciate the few sponsors that they did mange to acquire, but the major sponsors are literally nonexistent. Orange County is one of the most lucrative counties in the United States and it should be the perfect Mecca to host and support a professional basketball team. The team owners believe that they have assembled a class âA' program that is literally being ignored. For example, the Crush coaching staff were all former NBA players. The head coach, Earl Cureton won the ABA Championship last year as the head coach of the Long Beach Jam. Corey Gaines, a former UCLA star and former NBA player is the assistant coach. Former Laker great, Norm Nixon is the team's special operations coach. The players consist of former NBA star Sean Rooks, and a host of other players who were present at many of the NBA camps prior to the start of the NBA season. These are all top caliber players who have missed playing in the NBA by a fraction of a moment.
The non-support of this winning team remains a mystery. Maybe the people and businesses of Orange County just aren't ready to support and host a professional basketball team.
Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
