Rockville, MD - The Maryland Nighthawks were defeated 107-106 by the Brooklyn Comets Sunday evening in front of a sold out crowd.
The expansion Brooklyn Comets took an early 10-4 lead 3:25 minutes in the game on a Greg Morton (22 points) layup. The Nighthawks responded as Curtis Yarbrough scored the final five points for the Nighthawks in the first quarter, giving Maryland their first lead of the game 30-29 at the end of the first quarter.
The Nighthawks extended their lead to 50-45 with 2:33 remaining in the first half, but saw it unravel as Brooklyn went on a 9-2 run in the next 1:55 and took a 53-32 lead. Maryland's Barry Mitchell (six points) concluded the first half with a 13-foot basket giving the Nighthawks a 54-53 lead at halftime.
Maryland started the third quarter on a 10-3 run extending their lead to 64-56 with 9:46 remaining the period. Brooklyn responded by going on a 17-8 run in the next 3:45 taking a 73-72 lead with 6:01 to go in the period.
Brooklyn built their largest lead of the game of 88-79 with 11:29 remaining in the game on a Donald Hennie (13 points) three pointer. Maryland would again answer and go on a 7-0 run cutting the Brooklyn lead to two on an Andrew Washington 3D layup.
The Nighthawks tied the game at 106 after Andrew Washington connected on two free throws with 52 seconds remaining in the game, and came up with a defensive stop. The Nighthawks called their final time out and Andrew Washington's potential game winning shot was off the mark with six seconds remaining.
Brooklyn's Karl Sanders got the rebound with four seconds remaining, drove the length of the court and was fouled by Dennis Edwards (14 points) with no time remaining on the game clock. After the officials reviewed the play, they had the players from both teams clear the court and Sanders to the foul line. Sanders converted his first free throw attempt, giving the Comets a 107-106 walk off victory.
Andrew "Spongebob" Washington led the Nighthawks with 28 points, nine rebounds, and four assists, while Randy "White Chocolate" Gill finished with 25 points. Sun Ming Ming made his third consecutive start and finished with seven points on three-of-four shooting, three rebounds, and three blocked shots, but picked up his sixth foul with 3:40 remaining in the third quarter.
