NIFL Announces Players of the Week

March 15, 2004 - National Indoor Football League (NIFL) News Release


LAFAYETTE, LA—The National Indoor Football wrapped up Week One action after teams from across the Pacific and Atlantic Conferences hit the turf for six games over the weekend. The NIFL is pleased to announce the top players from both conferences as follows:

Pacific Conference:

Doug Smith – Quarterback, Utah Warriors

Pacific Conference Offensive Player of the Week

Utah quarterback Doug Smith helped lead the Warriors to their first win of the 2004 season after defeating the expansion Colorado Venom, 63-16, at the E-Center. Smith, a native of Sandy, Utah, completed 15 of 22 passes for 187 yards and five touchdowns on the night. He also racked up five rushes for 28 yards and one touchdown to his credit.

Tory Veland – Defensive Back, Omaha Beef

Pacific Conference Defensive Player of the Week

Omaha Beef defensive back Tory Veland led the way against the Sioux Falls Storm this past Saturday. The 6-foot-1, 210-pound Omaha native intercepted two passes, returning one for a 36-yard touchdown. Veland also made seven tackles and hauled in two passes, including one touchdown in the 41-14 win over Storm.

Ted Retzlaff – Kicker, Lincoln Capitols

Pacific Conference Special Teams Player of the Week

Lincoln kicker Ted Retzlaff was key in the Capitol's victory over the Black Hills Red Dogs over the weekend. Retzlaff scored five field goals in the 33-26 Capitols victory, propelling Lincoln to a 1-0 start early in the 2004 season.

Atlantic Conference:

Rocky Harvey – Running Back, Fort Wayne Freedom

Atlantic Conference Offensive Player of the Week

Fort Wayne running back Rocky Harvey had an amazing game as he helped the Freedom defeat the Show Me Believers 66-37 this past Sunday. The 5-foot-9, 190-pounder rushed 14 times for 47 yards, scoring five rushing touchdowns on the night. Harvey also set a new Freedom team record for rushing touchdowns scored in a game.

Rachman Crable – Defensive End, Fort Wayne Freedom

Atlantic Conference Defensive Player of the Week

Freedom defensive end Rachman Crable's efforts did not go unnoticed against the Show Me Believers on Sunday. Crable was responsible for 4.5 tackles, 1.5 tackles for a loss, and one sack in the win over the Believers as he anchored the Freedom's defensive line.

Adrian Reese – Wide Receiver, Fort Wayne Freedom

Atlantic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week

Fort Wayne wide receiver Adrian Reese gained a team record 187 yards on seven kickoff returns against the Believers over the weekend. Reese had an average of 26.7 yards per return, giving the Freedom an incredible field position advantage throughout the game.
