Orlando Predators News Release
ORLANDO, Fla. (Apr. 27) -- Former NFL standout Bernard Holsey has joined the Orlando Predators. Holsey signed a one-year contract on Thursday and he is expected to play this weekend when the Orlando Predators (4-3) take on the Las Vegas Gladiators (1-7) on Sunday afternoon.
"Right now our goal is to get better and make a run in the second half," Orlando Predators Head Coach Jay Gruden said. "We believe Bernard will make us a better football team. He is a veteran lineman with both NFL and Arena experience."
Holsey will play nose tackle and replace Eddie Freeman in the Predators starting lineup. Freeman was waived yesterday. He began the 2006 season with the Utah Blaze and was picked up by the Austin Wranglers in a mid-season trade. He appeared in five games with the Wranglers, making five tackles with a sack and forced fumble.
He began his AFL career with the Dallas Desperados in 2002, recording 13 tackles with a sack, forced fumble and tackle for loss in 13 games. His outstanding season earned him a contract with the New England Patriots, where he earned a roster spot and ended up with five tackles and a quarterback sack in six games.
Holsey signed with the Washington Redskins in 2003 and would enjoy an outstanding NFL season. He started all 16 games, posting 41 tackles with five quarterback pressures, 2.5 quarterback sacks and a fumble recovery.
A former standout at Duke, Holsey signed with the New York Giants as a free agent in 1996. He recorded 12 tackles in a reserve role. Holsey played in all 16 games for the Giants in 1997, finishing with 20 tackles and three quarterback sacks and added eight tackles in a reserve role in 1998. After seeing action in all 16 games as a reserve in 1999 (20 tackles), Holsey signed as a unrestricted free agent with the Indianapolis Colts. He started 13 games during the 2000 season, recording a career-high 76 tackles with four quarterback pressures, two sacks and a fumble recovery.
At Duke, Holsey lettered four seasons and posted 118 total tackles with 3.5 quarterback sacks, and 13 tackles-for-loss from his defensive tackle position.
