Milwaukee Mustangs News Release
MILWAUKEE (July 5, 2012) - The Milwaukee Mustangs take to the turf in the "Shark Tank" tomorrow night when they head to Jacksonville to take on the American Conference playoff-hopeful Sharks (7-8) at 7 p.m. in the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena.
The Mustangs are swimming for their playoff lives and will need to avoid a shark bite against a Jacksonville squad that has won five of its last nine games since quarterback Bernard Morris assumed the starting nod. Morris has passed for 1,860 yards and 42 touchdowns in that stretch to bring Jacksonville back into contention to defend its 2011 ArenaBowl title.
Stingy defense and team discipline are two of the reasons for the Sharks' recent success. Jacksonville ranks in the top five of several defensive categories, including scoring defense, pass defense, and total defense, thanks in large part to defensive end Richard Berry's 8.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries. The Sharks are also one of the least penalized teams in the league, giving up a mere 36.6 penalty yards per game.
But the X factor in this week's game might very well be Terrance Smith. A former member of the Green Bay Packers' practice squad, Smith has snagged 98 receptions for 1,150 yards and 29 touchdowns to lead the team in receiving. That's not all. The dynamic receiver is also a factor on the Sharks' special teams unit, having returned three kickoffs to the house already this season.
Just as last season's meeting was a hard-fought battle to the end in Jacksonville's 62-47 victory, this game is shaping up to be a pivotal game for both teams in their quest for the postseason. The Mustangs must win their remaining three games to have a chance at making the playoffs as a wild card.
The 2012 Milwaukee Mustangs are thrilled to honor and represent the Arena Football League as they celebrate their silver 25th anniversary this season. Tickets and Sponsorships are on sale now!
