Duke City Gladiators News Release

Belton T.X. - It was a pounding that the Duke City Gladiators gave the Centex Cavalry on Friday night. The final score was 79-29 and the win was the second time the Gladiators demolished the Cavalry this season.

The Gladiators came in with a goal of winning after barely losing to Amarillo in the week prior. The team's focus was getting back on track and gaining momentum after crossing the season halfway point.

The first quarter started slow as the Cavalry had first possession and soaked up most of the time. It wasn't until 6 minutes remained that the Gladiators drew first blood on a 2 yard rush by Running Back Lucein Walker. The Cavalry would score on a 4 yard run by their quarterback, but the PAT was blocked by the charging Gladiator defense. The first quarter would end 7-6.

The fireworks commenced in the 2nd quarter for the Gladiators as they put up 35 points in the quarter. It would begin as Quarterback Donovan Porterie found Wide Receiver Larry Cobb on a 12 yard touchdown catch. Cobb would go on to score three more times on three receptions the rest of the game. A major turnover on downs forced by Gladiator Defensive Back Thyrell Lewis gave Porterie the chance to connect with WR Sedrick Johnson on a 30 touchdown pass with 10:57 in the second. With the Gladiator lead 21-6 and momentum never changing, the defense stepped up as Defensive Lineman Eric Banford put pressure on the Centex quarterback forcing him to intentionally ground the ball in the end zone which resulted in a safety. The Cavalry had to punt the ball away to Duke City and proved to be a mistake as RB Antonio Bray received the kick and returned the ball 51 yards and a touchdown making the score 30-6 with 9:17 on the clock. Again the Gladiator defense pressured the Cavalry into attempting and missing a 37 yard field goal. This defensive stand enabled WR Sedrick Johnson to grab another touchdown pass only this time for 20 yards making the score 36-9 with 5 minutes left in the first half. The Cavalry showed some life with a touchdown rush, but no more than 6 points due to a blocked PAT. As the clock wound down, Cobb grabbed another touchdown reception from 4 yards out and closed out the first half with a score of 42-15.

Duke City stared the second half with the ball in hand, but it wouldn't be until 9:58 on the clock that Cobb would secure another score with a pass from Porterie from 13 yards out. WR Andre London found a spot for Porterie to find him and added 2 more points on the conversion making the score 50-15. The Gladiator defense was a force to be reckoned with as a sack lead by DB Ray Berry set up the Duke City offense to score again with Cobb. With 3:33 left in the third, a quick defensive read by DB Dontrell Johnson resulted in a pick six for 19 yards. Centex quickly went four and out which would give the Gladiators the opportunity to score on a 7 yard connection to Dexter Manley to close out the third quarter 71-15.

The fourth quarter reflected the beaten and battered Cavalry as they pushed as hard as they could to try and add some points to their score. They eventually were successful in adding 8 with 12:22 remaining in the fourth. As time continued to tick, the Gladiators resumed the damaging blows to the Cavalry as WR Julian Walker seized a 40 yard long bomb from Porterie to score. TE Zack Fondal found a way to catch a 2 point conversion pass and bring it to 79-23. The Cavalry would capitalize on another touchdown and miss their PAT and the game ended by a score of 79-29.

In the two games against the Centex Cavalry, the Gladiators have put up 154 total points. Duke City has scored a total of 373 points this season and currently lead the league in total points scored.

QB Porterie completed 8 TD passes, 275 passing yards and 1 interception. Receiver Larry Cobb had an outstanding game with 4 touchdown receptions for 50 yards, along with Sedrick Johnson who had 2 TD receptions for 50 yards. Dexter Manley and Julian Walker had 1 TD a piece. The defensive stronghold put some of the most pressure the league has seen to date led by players with sacks such as Kyle Patterson, Eric Banford, Fatu Ulale and Juvi Ray Berry.

The Gladiators play their seventh game of the season back at home and against the Salina Liberty. The matchup takes place this Saturday April 15th, 2017 at 6:05 PM Mountain Time with kick-off at 6:05 PM at Tingley Coliseum (300 San Pedro Dr. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87108). Doors will open at 4:30 PM.
