Newport Gulls News Release
NEWPORT, R.I. - Newport Gulls Youth Summer Camps are taking place at various locations in Newport County between June 18 and July 26, and are designed to create an enjoyable atmosphere where children ages 6-12 can learn the game of baseball and meet Gulls players and coaches.
"Summer camps are a great way to give something back to the island," said Gulls outfielder Rob Ort, who is in his second season with the team. "Everyone here does an amazing job welcoming us in and treating us great. These camps are just something small that we can do for the community. The kids love it and as long as they enjoy it, then I enjoy it."
"It's really nice to get out in the community and give back to all the families that support us throughout the season," said first baseman Steve Anderson during a summer camp at Portsmouth Little League Field.
The Gulls summer camps have become a favorite summer activity for families from the local communities. Camps are held four days a week from 9 a.m. to Noon at various locations. Week 1 (June 18-21) was held at Tiverton Little League Field; Week 2 (June 25-28) is currently taking place at Portsmouth Little League;Week 3 (July 2-6) will be in Middletown, Week 4 (July 9-12) is scheduled at Newport Little League (5th Ward), Week 5 camp (July 16-19) will be returning to Portsmouth, and Week 6 (July 23-26) will conclude at Middletown Little League Field.
"Camps have been such a huge success, said Briana Paganetti, Gulls community relations coordinator, who manages the camps. "This year we had our first camp in Tiverton, which really shows how much the kids all over Newport County enjoy learning and interacting with the players and coaches. It's the highlight of their summer."
Newport's professional staff of experienced coaches and dedicated players provide an opportunity for kids to learn the game of baseball as it should be played. The camps are coordinated by the Newport Gulls coaching staff, and other instructions consist of players from the 2012 team, who are considered some of the top collegiate players in the country.
Both boys and girls ages 6-12 are grouped by age and ability and taught basic baseball fundamentals, while competing in games and contests throughout the week. For the cost of $85, kids receive 12 hours of camp instruction, a Gulls game ticket, and a Gulls T-shirt.
The Newport Gulls 2012 Summer Camps are a great opportunity for young children to learn the game of baseball from the Major League Stars of Tomorrow.
