Newark Bears News Release

Newark, NJ - Tim Raines, Jr. delivered in the clutch, a two-run single with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, leading the Newark Bears to an 8-7 victory over the Camden Riversharks Friday night at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.

The Bears entered the bottom of the ninth, trailing 7-6, and facing reliever Ryan McKeller (4-7), brought in to close out the win for Camden. McKeller though walked Isaiah Kaaihue to lead off the inning, bringing Arthur Barone out of the Bears' dugout as a pinch-runner. James Cooper followed with another walk, moving Barone to second. Paddy Matera successfully bunted Barone and Cooper to second and third, setting up Raines, Jr.'s heroics. He lined the first pitch he saw from McKeller into the hole in right to easily score Barone and Cooper slid in safely under a tag on a close play at the plate.

The rally made a winner out of reliever Matt Smith (9-11), who pitched four innings in relief of Bears starter Bob Zimmermann. Smith allowed just one run and four hits over the final four innings, striking out five. The Kearny native now leads the team in victories with nine.

The Riversharks drew first blood in the top of the second inning off Bears starter Zimmermann when Sean Smith was hit by a pitch and came around to score on a passed ball. Camden broke the game open by scoring four runs off Zimmermann in the third inning. Chris Walker led off the inning with a double and after one out, Richie Robnett lifted a long drive over the wall in right field for a two-run homer, pushing the lead to 3-0. It was Robnett's 13th homer of the season. The Riversharks added two more runs on a fielder's choice and an RBI double from Juan Francia, making it 5-0.

After being kept off base for the first three innings by Josh Brey, the Bears exploded for four runs in the home fourth. Raines, Jr. broke up Brey's perfection with a double and scored one pitch later when Kennard Jones singled up the middle, cutting the lead to 5-1. Following a Brian Barton single, Jones scored on Carl Everett's infield ground out for the second run. Manny Mejia later drove in a run with a double and Kaaihue plated the fourth run with a single, slicing the lead to 5-4.

The Riversharks scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 7-4 lead. Raul Padron hit a solo homer in the fifth, his 12th round tripper of the season, to make it 6-4 and Robnett's third RBI of the game came on a single that scored Walker, who tripled to start the frame. Barton lifted a solo homer to right in the bottom of the sixth inning, drawing the Bears to within 7-5. It was Barton's 17th homer of the season. The Bears cut the lead to 7-6 in the bottom of the eighth when Eric Munson lifted a sacrifice fly to score Barton, who reached on a walk and moved to third on an outfield error. For the Bears, Barton led the way with two hits and three runs scored. Robnett, Walker and Francia had three hits each for Camden.
