NEW YORK (Monday, September 22, 2014) - New York Red Bulls forward Bradley Wright-Phillips was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for Week 28 of the 2014 MLS regular season. It is the player's second honor of the season.
Wright-Phillips notched a hat-trick in the Red Bulls' 4-1 home win against the Seattle Sounders FC. Wright-Phillips' three goals brings his count to 24, just three shy of the MLS single season record.
Wright-Phillips got the scoring started early when he powered a shot past Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei in the first minute of the game. A pass from Red Bulls midfielder Lloyd Sam found Wright-Phillips in the middle of the box; he played a pass to Ambroise Oyongo who fired a shot at goal. The attempt was parried by Frei to the foot of Wright-Phillips who blasted the ball into the bottom left corner of the net.
In the 54th minute Wright-Phillips doubled his tally from the penalty spot. After a foul in the box on Sam, Wright-Phillips stepped up to take the spot kick sending a low shot to the bottom left corner, squeezing by Frei who got a hand on the ball.
Two minutes later, the Englishman secured his hat-trick to give the Red Bulls a 3-0 lead. After making a run down the left flank, Roy Miller sent a perfectly measured cross into the box, which Wright-Phillips took first time sending a bullet shot past Frei.
The New York Red Bulls return to action this Sunday as they head out west take on the LA Galaxy at 8:30 p.m. ET (ESPN2, ESPN Deportes and TSN2).
The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media. More information and membership information can be found at http://www.soccerreporters.com/ .
