
New York Red Bulls Defender Joins Kickers on Loan

RICHMOND, VA - (Friday, June 6, 2008) - The Richmond Kickers are pleased to announce the addition of defender John Gilkerson, on loan from the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer. Gilkerson is slated to make his Kickers debut in Harrisburg tonight, pending USL/USSF approval.
Gilkerson signed a developmental contract with the Red Bulls, prior to the 2008 season out of Winthrop University. The native of Winchester, Virginia concluded his collegiate career named to the All-Big South First Team for his junior and senior seasons. In 2006, he was named to the NSCAA All-South Atlantic Region Team. One year later, he started all of the 18 regular season games played, netting one goal and two assists while leading a defense that conceded just 13 goals all year. He also brings USL experience to the Kickers, having spent the 2006 and 2007 seasons with the Hampton Roads Piranhas of the Premier Development League.
The Richmond Kickers head to Harrisburg for a USL-2 Championship rematch against the City Islanders this evening, Friday, June 6th. Kickoff is set for 7:05 pm at the Skyline Sports Complex. The Kickers return home to open the 2008 edition of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday, June 10th, slated to face the PDL side Fredericksburg Gunners at 8:00 pm at Sports Backers Stadium. Richmond returns to regular season action the following weekend, hosting the Bermuda Hogges on Saturday, June 14th at 7:00 pm at the University of Richmond Stadium.
