Carolina Courage News Release
Cary, NC (April 26, 2003) - Tiffeny Milbrett scored two goals to lead the New York Power past the Carolina Courage 3-1 at SAS Stadium Saturday night. The Power (1-3-0) snapped a three-game skid, while extending the Courage's winless streak to three games.
After winning the regular season title and Founders Cup II in 2002, the Courage (0-3-0) has opened the 2003 campaign with three straight losses, all of which have come at home.
Christie Welsh opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a terrific individual effort. The speedy striker collected a loose ball at midfield and streaked down the left sidelines, eluding Courage defenders along the way. As she charged into the penalty box, Welsh cut back inside Carolina's Nel Fettig and hammered a right-footed shot past goalkeeper Maite Zabala. It was the first career goal for New York's first round draft pick.
Tiffeny Milbrett doubled the lead right before halftime. Justi Baumgardt provided the perfect service to Milbrett, who slipped in behind the Courage back line. Milbrett, with a deft little flick, redirected the pass into the right corner of the net.
Following halftime, the Courage worked hard work to get back in the game. These efforts were rewarded when Unni Lehn was dumped in the box, earning the Courage a penalty kick. Danielle Fotopoulos converted the penalty, driving the ball past goalkeeper Carly Smolak in the 66th minute.
The Courage comeback was put on ice in the 73rd minute, however, when Milbrett snatched her second goal of the game. After New York earned a free kick on the edge of the 18 yard box, Milbrett curled a dipping free kick over the wall and just under the crossbar. With seven goals and four assists in only seven games, Milbrett is the all-time leading scorer against the Courage.
With the loss, the Courage finds itself at the bottom of the league standings with Philadelphia, the only other winless team.
