WASHINGTON, D.C. (Saturday, April 26, 2003) - Shannon MacMillan rocked a shorthanded Canadian team with four goals to lead the U.S. to an impressive 6-1 victory on Saturday afternoon at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. The hat trick for MacMillan was the third of her career, and it was her first four-goal game. She joins Michelle Akers, Brandi Chastain, Mia Hamm and Tiffeny Milbrett as the only players to score at least four goals in one game. Spirit players Julie Foudy added a goal, Aly Wagner tallied two assists and Joy Fawcett recorded one assist in the win.

The U.S. actually trailed in the match after an early goal from Canadian Christine Sinclaire, but a free kick from 19 yards from MacMillan tied the match in the 16th minute. MacMillan's most impressive strike was on a 40-yard one-time drive that beat goalkeeper Erin McLeod in the 55th minute.

"We had a lot of patience today, which is important," said MacMillan. "All the balls I received today from teammates were the keys to the goals. If I don't finish them, I don't belong on the field. Right now we are trying to be as sharp as we can. With no residency before the Women's World Cup, we must take advantage of these games."

U.S. head coach April Heinrichs described MacMillan's performance like this: "Mobile, dynamic, unpredicatable. She is finishing great chances, but also creating great chances."

The other two U.S. goals came from Kristine Lilly, playing in her 250th international match, and Foudy.

The Spirit's four U.S. players and Canada's Christine Latham will return to San Diego this evening to prepare for tomorrow's important match against the San Jose CyberRays at Torero Stadium, 5 p.m. kickoff. The game will feature the U.S. Navy Leap Frogs entering the stadium during the National Anthem, Girl Scout Day, free $10 Dave & Buster's Power Cards to the first 4,000 fans, San D. Panda's birthday and a mascot 6 v. 6 halftime game. Tickets are still available through Ticketmaster, or the stadium box office on Sunday beginning at 10 a.m.
