New York Liberty News Release

LAST TWO GAMES

Game #8: June 10 - Liberty 71, Silver Stars 67 (San Antonio, TX): The Liberty, playing the second half of a back-to-back, started the first quarter off strong, taking a 13-11 lead, a product of tough defense ... The offensive was triggered by Becky Hammon, who scored the team's first points on a three-point field goal ... The solid play continued for the Liberty into the second quarter, as the team outscored the Silver Stars by four to take a six point lead into the locker room at the half ... After the break, the team's solid offense continued and New York took a nine point lead into the final period ... The Liberty saw a 14 point lead slip to as few as two with only seven seconds remaining in the game, but two free throws from Erin Thorn with six seconds to go sealed the game for the Liberty ... Hammon led the Liberty with a game-high 23 points ... Vickie Johnson led San Antonio with 15.

Game #7: June 9 - Liberty 62, Comets 97 (Houston, TX): In New York's first western conference road trip of this regular season, the team fell to an early Comets' 7-0 run that set the tone for the opening quarter in which the Liberty committed seven turnovers ... New York turned it around in the second quarter behind an early three-point shot from Iciss Tillis that brought the Liberty to within five, 21-26... Sherill Baker hit a running layup to close the gap to three, 23-26, the closest margin since the opening minute of the game... A series of scrappy plays from Tamecka Dixon and Sancho Lyttle brought the Houston lead back to double-digits late in the quarter, 37-27, and took them into the half with a 13-point lead... The third quarter was more Houston as the Liberty shot 7-16 from the field, but could not shrink the gap between the two teams... Baker provided a spark early in the final frame, connecting on an early lay-up and 1-2 from the line, but the Comets 37-point lead (93-56), the team's largest of the game, was too much for New York... The Liberty finished with three players in double-figures led by Tillis, who recorded 12 points on the night... Houston was led by Tina Thompson's game-high 23 points.

TEAM NOTES

THE FIRST ONE'S THE HARDEST: With the 71-67 victory over San Antonio at the AT&T Center on Saturday, New York finally picked up its first road win of the season ... The victory came after an 0-5 start away from The Garden ... The team started the regular season with a four straight games on the road - all losses - then came home for two games before embarking on a two-game road trip, with the first win coming in the latter game ... The five-game season-opening road losing streak is the longest in history of the Liberty ... The previous high was the three-game losing streak the team earned on the road to open both the 1998 and 2000 seasons ... The team garnered its first road win in its fourth away game both seasons ... Saturday's win in San Antonio was the first in the team's sixth road game.

CAN YOU BACK THAT UP?: The Liberty just completed its first back-to-back series of the season ... The team left Texas 1-1 after losing to Houston, 97-62 on Friday, then defeating San Antonio, 71-67 on Saturday ... The Liberty is now 57-36 all-time in back-to-back situations ... New York should get used to the harried schedule, as the team will play five more back-to-backs this season ... The Liberty will play four home/road series and one road/home yet in 2006.
