New York City FC Forward David Villa Voted MLS Player of the Week

June 16, 2015 - Major League Soccer (MLS) News Release

NEW YORK (Tuesday, June 16, 2015) - New York City FC forward David Villa was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for Week 15 of the 2015 MLS season.

The NYCFC captain secured his second Player of the Week nod on the heels of his finest MLS performance to date. Villa powered his club to a 3-1 win over the Montreal Impact on Saturday, recording his team-leading fourth goal, an assist and seven shots. He joins Toronto FC's Sebastian Giovinco and New York Red Bulls' Bradley Wright-Phillips as the only players to win multiple Player of the Week honors so far this season.

Villa opened the scoring for NYCFC in the 31st minute, capping off a beautiful passing sequence by his teammates. Tommy McNamara picked up the ball on the left side and quickly found Patrick Mullins inside the area who tapped it back to Mehdi Ballouchy. Villa made a perfectly timed run through a trio of Montreal defenders, picking up the feed from Ballouchy and burying his shot from 12 yards out.

Montreal pulled within one goal late in the match, but Villa helped ice the game in the 90th minute by delivering an assist on Kwadwo Poku's first MLS goal. Villa made a run down the left flank and curled a cross in behind two Impact defenders. The pass landed directly on Poku's right foot, and the Ghanaian newcomer slotted it past Evan Bush to secure NYCFC's second consecutive win.

New York City FC returns to MLS action on Saturday, June 20 when it faces Toronto FC at BMO field at 7:00 p.m. ET (MLS LIVE).

The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media. More information and membership information can be found at http://www.soccerreporters.com/.
