Following a standout 2004 inaugural season, resulting in the highest win total for an Arena Football League expansion franchise and a Southern Division championship, the New Orleans VooDoo have already turned their attention to the goal of retaining the key components of the team for 2005. The VooDoo have reached agreements with the following 11 players on new contracts; OS Aaron Bailey, OL/DL Aaron Hamilton, OL/DL Bruce McClure, DS Monty Montgomery, OL/DL Abdul-Salam Noah, DS Chris Pointer, OS Jacques Rumph, K Brian Schmitz, DS Denario Smalls, WR/DB Calvin Spears and WR/LB Tory Woodbury.
Bailey (6-1, 195, Louisville) is a four-year Arena Football League veteran who made an immediate impact on the VooDoo offense and finished among the league's leading receivers with 91 receptions for 1,364 yards with a career-high 32 touchdowns. During his AFL career, Bailey has amassed 258 receptions for 3,626 yards and 71 touchdowns. Bailey spent five seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, recording 67 receptions for 1,040 yards and six touchdowns. Bailey is still the Colts' career leader with 3,501 kickoff returns yards and is tied for the career lead with two touchdown returns.
Hamilton (6-5, 280, Tarleton State) was signed by the VooDoo at the end of training camp and added valuable depth to the line. He recording 16 tackles and a team-high five sacks, a total which ranked ninth in the AFL.
McClure (6-5, 305, Oklahoma) started 15 games at center for New Orleans. The six-year AFL veteran has appeared in 73 games in his career.
Montgomery (6-0, 195, Houston) is a five-year NFL veteran who was named to the AFL's All-Rookie team in 2004. Montgomery was a defensive force for New Orleans, recording 85 tackles (81 solo), five interceptions, three fumble recoveries and 25 passes defensed.
Montgomery has been signed to a contract by the New Orleans Saints and will compete for a roster spot in training camp. He has been placed on the VooDoo's exempt/other league reserve list, meaning that the VooDoo will retain his Arena Football League rights.
Noah (6-2, 280, San Jose State) provided valuable depth to the VooDoo line, recording 16 tackles, one sack, one tackle for a loss and two fumble recoveries.
Pointer (5-11, 187, Kentucky State) started 15 games opposite Montgomery and finished second on the team with 64 tackles and 18 passes defensed.
Rumph (5-8, 180, Carson-Newman) was activated from the New Orleans practice squad for second half of the season and recorded 14 receptions for 144 yards.
Schmitz (6-1, 170, North Carolina) is a four-year AFL veteran who finished among the league's leading kickers with 92 points and third in the league with 40 touchbacks.
Smalls (5-9, 185, East Tennessee State) appeared in three games and recorded eight tackles and one interception.
Spears (6-0, 195, Grambling) appeared in 12 games and finished as the VooDoo's third leading receiver with 31 receptions for 319 yards with five touchdowns, while adding 28.5 tackles on defense.
Woodbury (6-2, 208, Winston-Salem State) competed for a roster spot at quarterback for the New Orleans Saints in 2003 training camp. He was signed by the VooDoo on May 4 and appeared on one contest, while learning the two-way AFL game.
