THE COACHES

Mike Neu: The first coach of the New Orleans VooDoo, Mike Neu is a six-year Arena Football coaching veteran.

Since being named coach of the VooDoo on June 17, 2003, Neu worked has worked tirelessly to make New Orleans a winning team. In his first season at the helm, he successfully molded a 24-man roster comprised of a mix of AFL veterans and rookies, allowing the VooDoo to get off to a 7-1 start, one of the fastest starts for a first-year AFL entry. Neu led the VooDoo to an 11-5 record, making them the only team in league history to win 11 games in their first season.

The VooDoo's Southern Division title marked only the fourth time in AFL history that an expansion franchise has won their division in their first year of play. Following the season, Neu was named the AFL Coach of the Year.

For his professional career, Neu has posted a 25-17 regular season record as an AFL head coach and has reached the playoffs every season as both a coach and a player in the Arena Football League.

Neu came to New Orleans after serving as head coach of the Carolina Cobras. In 2002, Neu guided the Cobras to a 5-2 record on the road and their second-straight playoff berth. Carolina posted the first playoff victory in club history in 2002 as the club featured the AFL's fourth-ranked defense. As offensive coordinator with the Cobras in 2001, before being promoted to head coach prior to the team's first round playoff game, the Cobras averaged over 56 points a game (fifth in the league) and finished 7-7 (improving from a 3-13 record the year before).

Prior to coming to Carolina, Neu served as head coach and director of football operations for the Augusta Stallions of af2 in 2000. In his only season, Neu led Augusta to a 14-4 record, the American Conference title and was named the league's Coach of the Year. Augusta finished in the top four in every major offensive and defensive category. Neu started his Arena Football League coaching career with Nashville in 1998, when he served as quarterbacks coach for the Kats and handled all play-calling responsibilities for the offense. The next year he was promoted to offensive coordinator and the Kats achieved their third consecutive playoff berth. The team also set franchise highs in six offensive categories, including scoring and total offense. Current New Orleans QB Andy Kelly, one of top quarterbacks in Arena Football League history, enjoyed a career-high passer rating of 116.4 under Neu's tutelage in 1999. Neu began his coaching career in 1994 as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, Ball State.

Neu's professional playing career started with a stint with the Canadian Football League's Calgary Stampeders in 1995 before joining the Arena Football League's Orlando Predators in 1996 and moving on to the Nashville Kats in 1997. The 1997 Nashville squad which Neu played on won an expansion record 10 games, a record which was broken by this VooDoo in 2004.

Neu played four seasons at Ball State, where he was named the MAC Most Valuable Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year as a senior in 1993. A four-year starter, Neu guided Ball State to the conference championship his final year and holds school career passing records in passing yardage, passing attempts, completions and touchdown passes. He was recently voted to the school's Athletic Hall of Fame. Neu and his wife, Charmin, have a daughter, Graycen and a son, Carson.

Mike Dailey: Mike Dailey enters his second season in Colorado and ninth as head coach in the AFL, after becoming the Crush's second head coach on June 26, 2003.

Dailey joined the Crush following 13 seasons in the Albany/Indiana Firebirds organization, including the final seven as head coach.

In his first season in Colorado, Dailey helped guide the Crush to the largest turnaround in AFL history, inheriting a 2-14 team and leading them to an 11-5 record in 2004, tied for the best in the league. He also led the Crush to their first playoff appearance and first win, advancing to the AFL Semifinals before falling nine yards short of up-ending topseeded Arizona and earning a trip to ArenaBowl XVII.

One of the most successful and well-respected coaches in AFL history, Dailey's teams have compiled an overall record of 83-57, a winning percentage of .593, and he ranks fifth on the AFL's all-time list for coaching wins (regular season and playoffs). Dailey's teams have made six postseason appearances and he has won three division titles.

The Crush traded three players to Indiana for the rights to Dailey, whose Firebirds teams compiled a 63-46 record, a winning percentage of 57.8 in his seven seasons. In 1999 Dailey led the Firebirds to their only ArenaBowl championship and a regular season-playoff record of 14-3, best in franchise history. He was named AFL Coach of the Year following that standout campaign.

Before being named coach of the Firebirds in 1997, Dailey served as an assistant in Albany for five seasons under current Chicago coach Mike Hohensee. He spent three seasons as the team's offensive coordinator, during which time the Firebirds led the league in scoring, with an average of 60.4 points per game. Dailey also coached the other side of the ball, serving as Firebirds defensive coordinator in 1992 and 1993. During the 1993 season the Firebirds forced 13 fumbles while recovering 14, and also totaled 16 interceptions and 358 tackles.

Dailey began his AFL coaching career with the Washington Commandos where he served as offensive/defensive line coach in 19990. He joined the Firebirds organization in the same capacity in 2991.

Prior to the AFL, Dailey served as an assistant coach at Towson State University and was the offensive coordinator at Montgomery College-Rockville (Md.).

TOPS AT HOME

A contributing factor for the VooDoo's early success is their cumulative 10-3 regular season record at the New Orleans Arena. After finishing tied for first in the league with a 7-1 home record in 2004, The VooDoo have kept pace this current season, compiling a 4-2 record at "The Graveyard".

WHAT A CROWD

Through the regular season in 2004, the VooDoo attracted an average of 15,240 fans per game to the Graveyard. New Orleans' average crowd ranked third in the Arena Football League, led attendance figures for teams in the Southern Division and was above the league average of 12,019. This season, the VooDoo's attendance has once again remained third in the AFL, above the league average of 12,821 and possessed the highest figures in the Southern Division, fueled by three consecutive sellout crowds. Below are the league's top average attendance figures.

Team Average Attendance
1. Philadelphia Soul 15,982
2. Columbus Destroyers 15,549
3. New Orleans VooDoo 15,388
4. Tampa Bay Storm 15,129
5. Chicago Rush 14,352
6. San Jose SaberCats 13,609
7. Orlando Predators 13,289
8. Colorado Crush 13,217
9. Georgia Force 12,870
10. Los Angeles Avengers 12,207

GETTING DEFENSIVE

An important reason for the New Orleans VooDoo's 11-5 inaugural season was the team's ability to keep the opposition out of the end zone on the defensive end. Through 16 regular season games, New Orleans surrendered an average of only 45.1 points per game, putting them in second place in the Arena Football League in scoring defense. The New Orleans defense has kept a similar pace in 2005, surrendering an average of only 46.5 points per game, ranking them third in the AFL in scoring defense. After surrendering 257.1 yards per game in 2004, the VooDoo have surrendered only 258.7 yards per game for the fourth ranked defense in the league.

LINE PLAY

Since the VooDoo started play in 2004, coach Mike Neu has stressed the importance of line play towards the team's success. This has proven true once again in 2005, as the line has been amongst the AFL's best in protecting Andy Kelly as well as in rushing opposing passers. In 2005, the New Orleans line has allowed Kelly to be dropped only seven times, the fourth lowest total in the Arena Football League. On the defensive side of the ball, New Orleans has recorded 16 sacks, the fourth highest total in the AFL. While presenting solid depth, B.J. Cohen has remained the line's constant over the past two seasons. Cohen has recorded a career-high nine sacks for New Orleans, tied for the second -highest total in the Arena Football League in 2005.

IMPACT PLAYER

New Orleans VooDoo OS Aaron Bailey has been an important part of the VooDoo offense and one of the AFL's leading receivers since signing with the team prior to their inaugural season. In 2004, Bailey recorded 91 receptions for 1364 yards with 32 touchdowns and finished among league leaders in all major receiving categories, while setting career-highs. This season, Bailey is once again ranked among AFL leaders with a career-high 118 receptions for 1414 yards and 28 TD catches, while returning 17 kickoffs for 284 yards with one TD. Bailey is currently ranked fifth in the AFL in scoring among nonkickers (180) and fourth in touchdown receptions, ranked first in receptions and second in receiving yardage and total yards from scrimmage (1415), eighth in all-purpose yards (1703), second in first downs (87) and seventh in third down receptions (15).

ANDY KELLY

QB Andy Kelly, one of the Arena Football League's premier quarterbacks and all-time passing leaders, was signed by the VooDoo in the team's objective to improve their passing offense. He currently holds the AFL career passing records for completions (3266), attempts (5227) and passing yards (35, 865) and is second all-time in touchdown passes (697). Kelly helped engineer squads in Nashville, Dallas and Detroit to playoff berths in seven consecutive seasons from 1997-2003 and helped lead the Kats to consecutive ArenaBowl berths from 2000-01. Kelly has started 131 consecutive games, the all-time record for consecutive starts by a QB. Kelly currently trails New York's Aaron Garcia (704) for the league's all-time lead in touchdown passes by seven scores, as he is currently one of the top ranked quarterbacks in the Arena Football League in 2005 and is at or near the top of the league leaders in most categories, completing 381-of-574 passes for 3832 yards with 77 touchdown passes and nine interceptions. The 12-year AFL veteran is currently leading the league in attempts and completions, is ranked second in passing yardage and touchdown passes and is ranked fifth in completion percentage (66.4).

B.J. COHEN

OL/DL B.J. Cohen's presence on the line has played a key role for the VooDoo. Starting 16 games in 2004, Cohen recorded 26 tackles, four sacks and finished third in the Arena Football League with a career-high four forced fumbles. In 2005, Cohen is currently among the AFL's defensive leaders with 27.5 tackles, a career-high nine sacks, two tackles for a loss, one interception and six passes defensed. Cohen is tied for second in the AFL in sacks and is ranked second in combined tackles for a loss with 11.

Coach Neu Says

Excerpts from VooDoo Head Coach Mike Neu's comments from the team's weekly press conference on Monday, May 2.

(on if this team has proven itself to be a playoff caliber team) "We have, but the problem I see is from a consistency standpoint. Playoff caliber teams play consistent football especially at this stretch in the season and we're not. We're coming out for two straight weeks in the bye week. We played good on all three phases against Columbus. We didn't play as sharp as we needed to against Grand Rapids, but I think they're improving as a football team as well. Then we have a letdown against Tampa Bay. Anytime you got the number of veteran players in a game like we do of this magnitude, you expect for those guys to step up in big games. Unfortunately, we did not get that done. I think we're a playoff caliber team, but where we're struggling right now, you got to play consistent football every single week and we got to be able to find a way to do that real fast."

(on getting a break with some other AFL games falling the VooDoo's way or the importance of at least winning two of the next three games to get in the playoffs) "No question. We got a break. I hate to keep leaning on it. We need to play football like we're capable of playing. We're fortunate in that our next two games are at home, where we have a great homefield advantage. This next game against Colorado and then that next game against Austin is going to make or break us right there. You look at those two games, we're going to know what our fate is heading down to Orlando. First and foremost, we're going to play at home this weekend, the next two weeks, we have a great homefield advantage and if we're going to do some damage, it's going to be done the next two weeks, starting with Colorado, which is all we're concerned about right now."

(on if while there are a lot of team's bunched together with the same record if he did not expect this team to have five losses at this point) "No, no question, with the additions we made in the offseason, at this point in the season, we should be staring at nine or ten wins. Some of the games unfortunately we lost down the stretch, it's tough, sitting here right now, I would expect it to be nine or ten wins."

(on if he considers the rash of penalties in the past game disappointing considering the veteran roster he possesses) "It is. Some of the penalties occurred by some of our best veteran players, guys that they weren't rookies out there making those mistakes. You got veteran players that with the personal foul calls, the pre-snap penalties, the false starts, the holding calls. Those guys have played the game long enough. When it's crunch time, those guys need to rise above everybody else and I think we took a little bit of a step backwards from that area the other night."

(on what happened to Tim Martin) "At the end of the game and I was on the opposite side of the field, he was upset because two plays in a row, Kelvin Kinney got his hands in his facemask and gouged him in his eyes. I couldn't see it from the opposite side of the field. That's what Tim was all upset about. Again, I know he's upset, but you can't lose your cool in that situation. We had a first down. That moved it back. All that's doing is taking more time off the clock. In that situation, time is precious."

(on if this is a coaches league due to the parity in talent and if he feels pressure as a result) "I feel pressure, no question about it. Anytime we win or lose. If we lose games, If you win, the players deserve to get the credit. If we lose, I first and foremost point the blame at myself. What could I have done different in that football game to get us in the endzone more. What could I have done personnelwise to give us a better advantage. I certainly point to myself first. When you have as much parity in this league as you do now and everybody's on a level playing field, it's going to come down to how you manage certain situations during the course of the game. Number one, as a coach and I preach all the time about discipline, you can't have nine penalties in a football game. I don't care. Anybody can say what they want about the officiating or we should have gotten this call, or we didn't get that call. Let's take it out of the officials' hands. It's up to us. That was what was disappointing to us. We were the second least penalized team in the league, but yet, we come out and commit nine penalties in a game that was really a playoff atmosphere."

(on if he slept at all on Saturday night) "No, I take it as bad as anybody. I can't stand to lose. The only thing that saves face and helps me get over it is going home and looking at my kids. That helps me to get over it being with my family. I take losing harder than anybody. I can't stand to lose even if it's one drive in practice against the defense when we're trying to compete. I don't want to lose that. Hopefully I can get the ship righted real fast. I believe in this football team. I believe in my coaches. I'm fortunate to have some great coaches, but we got to come out and we got to play and we got to make these fans proud to have the New Orleans VooDoo on the field to represent this community. We got the ability to get that done and it's my job to find a way to get that done and to pull the right maneuvers if you will from a personnel standpoint, but I got to get 20 guys on that field screaming, flying around and playing hard-nosed football and that's my job to do that."

(on playing a team this week in Colorado that is in a similar dire situation to what Tampa Bay was in the week before and if he thinks they will have a pep in their step) "No question, you're going to get a Colorado team, obviously they've lost 3 straight. They're slowly...They're sitting on top of the world at 8-2 three weeks back and all of a sudden they're right back in the clump of the playoff race and you're talking about losing another game and they're talking about possibly missing the playoffs. Colorado's been around long enough, Coach (Mike) Dailey's been around long enough. He'll find a way to get that team playing well and they're staring at playoff elimination as well, so we're going to get their best effort coming in here.
