New Mexico Ice Wolves News Release

(Albuquerque, NM) - The New Mexico Ice Wolves® and Outpost Ice Arenas today announced the NAHL NM Ice Wolves will suit up in sled hockey gear for a fun scrimmage game against the reigning USAH National Champion Tier 6 bracket New Mexico Blade Runners sled hockey team. The game is free to the public and takes place on Sunday, March 17 at 2pm MT at Outpost Ice Arenas to raise awareness for the NM Blade Runners sled hockey program. Fans will have an opportunity to see sled hockey and see their NAHL NM Ice Wolves players in action on ice with a fun twist.

The New Mexico Blade Runners non-profit sled hockey team was started in 2014 with a handful of disabled athletes and dedicated volunteers. The program has continued to grow and mature. In 2023 the Blade Runners won the USAH National Championship in the Tier 6 bracket. To learn more about The New Mexico Blade Runners or make a donation to help support local sled hockey please visit their sled hockey programs page and follow them on their Facebook page or on X @NMBladeofficial and Instagram at NM Blade Runners Sled Hockey.

Similar to wheelchair basketball, sled hockey follows most of the typical ice hockey rules with the albeit with accessible equipment. Players sit in specially designed sleds that sit on top of two hockey skate blades. There are two sticks for each player instead of one and the sticks have metal picks on the butt end for players to propel themselves. Goalies wear basically the same equipment but have metal picks sewn into the backside of their catching glove to allow the goalie to maneuver. Sled hockey provides athletic opportunities for all ages and many types of disabilities at the local level for recreation/competition, all the way to the National Sled Team that plays in World Championships and the Paralympics.

The NAHL NM Ice Wolves are looking for a return to the playoffs as they battle through a stacked South Division. The NAHL NM Ice Wolves have one remaining home stand in March against the Corpus Christi Ice Rays March 29-30. The NA3HL South Division Champion NM Ice Wolves begin a best of three South Division Finals playoff series against the Louisiana Drillers today, Thursday, March 14 at 6:30pm MT at Outpost Ice Arenas in Albuquerque. In anticipation fans can visit the NM Ice Wolves NA3HL ticket site for a Three-Game Packages or single playoff game tickets. Game 3 is if necessary so any fans who purchase the Three-Game Package will get a credit toward a possible next playoff series or future NA3HL or NAHL games this season or next if a third game is not needed.
