San Diego Surf Dawgs News Release
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Surf Dawgs return home with a renewed hope of defending their 2005 GBL championship. In a trade with the Long Beach Armada, Yoankis Turino has been acquired for Jose Canseco. New President Gary Lochansky and General Manager Brian Watkins are excited to introduce the young phenom Turino to San Diego as he should bring stability to the rotation. A press conference is scheduled for 5 PM, two hours before the Surf Dawgs take on the Chico Outlaws. Members of the press will be provided refreshments and have the opportunity to witness Turino throw a live bullpen session.
Turino, 27, has played at the top level of Cuban baseball since his late teens. A member of the renowned Cuban team, the Havana Industriales, his team won the country championship in three out of four seasons. Left off Cuban international teams because of concerns that he would defect, he features a mid-90s fastball, a big-league curveball, and outstanding control. He successfully escaped to the Dominican Republic and made it to Los Angeles last month. He has not received the proper exposure, but he has the opportunity to demonstrate his big league arsenal with the Surf Dawgs.
The Surf Dawgs return home for a three-game series against the Chico Outlaws which will include a ceremony to honor the 2005 Golden Baseball League Champion Surf Dawgs. Members of the team, including Rickey Henderson, will return to receive their championship rings, Friday, July 7th at Tony Gwynn Stadium at 7:05 P.M.
