Nelson Hockey Partners with the Maryland Black Bears' NAHL Franchise

March 13, 2019 - North American Hockey League (NAHL) - Maryland Black Bears News Release

ODENTON, MD - The Maryland Black Bears (NAHL) have established a partnership with Nelson Hockey, creating an alliance that offers unique opportunities, benefiting elite players through greater engagement with the Black Bears players and coaching staff. Jr. Black Bears teams will play in the CBHL in the Upper A or AA Divisions. Tryouts for the new teams begin April 27, 2019, at the Piney Orchard Ice Arena in Odenton, MD.

The Maryland Black Bears are the only NAHL team located in the state of Maryland. The partnership and proximity create a potential pipeline to the next level of play for the Jr. Black Bears.

"Sharing the building with the Maryland Black Bears, an NAHL team with highly skilled players and coaches, sets our program up for success," said Nelson Burton, Director of Nelson Hockey and former Washington Capital's Winger. "The Maryland Jr. Black Bears will be competitive with the right players, coaches, and interaction with the Maryland Black Bears organization."

Nelson Hockey, the umbrella organization that includes the popular Metro Maple Leafs Youth Hockey organization, will continue to offer team opportunities to players at all levels. They also offer "Learn to Play" and Adult League teams to players in Central Maryland. The introduction of the Maryland Jr. Black Bears will compliment and expand Nelson's current programs.

As the Maryland Black Bears complete their 1st season of play, collaborating with Nelson Hockey will have many benefits for the hockey franchise.

"The foundation of our fan base is built on hockey families," said Robyn Remick, President of the Maryland Black Bears (NAHL) and Team Maryland (EHL). "The brand we are building for our teams is incredibly complimentary to the organization Nelson Burton has built. Our players and coaches will continue to spend time with the Team Maryland youth programs in Rockville and now, we'll have a second channel of local players to work with more intensively."
