Nelson, G-Braves Shutdown Stars
June 21, 2003 - Southern League (SL1)
Mississippi Braves News Release
GREENVILLE, SC -- The Greenville Braves picked up their first win of the second half of the Southern League season with 5-0 victory over the Huntsville Stars. G-Braves starter Bubba Nelson (6-6) pitched seven shutout innings and allowed only four hits to get the win.
The game was scoreless until Greenville broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth inning off of Stars starter Derek Lee (9-3). Catcher J.C. Boscan led off with a walk, and Nelson laid down a sacrifice bunt that Lee misplayed to allow Nelson to take first. Second baseman Richard Lewis then laced a single to right-center that plated Boscan. James Jurries followed with a walk. Center fielder Ryan Langerhans brought in two runs with a single to right, and came around for the fifth run of the inning on Bill McCarthy's double off of the right field wall.
Nelson's only bit of trouble came in the second inning when the Stars tried to mount a two-out rally. Daryl Clark drew a walk, and catcher Kade Johnson followed with a drive to left that appeared to be a homerun but was ruled still in play. Clark pulled up at third and Johnson settled for a double. Nelson was able to get out of the jam with a flyout from Lee.
G-Braves reliever Roman Colon pitched the final two innings to preserve the shutout. Lewis led the way at the plate going 2-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
