Nehrling Likely Out for Season
September 25, 2002 - United Hockey League (UHL)
Adirondack Frostbite News Release
Glens Falls, NY â The Adirondack IceHawks defenseman Lucas Nehrling (NAYR-ling) is expected to miss the 2002-2003 United Hockey League (UHL) season after breaking his right femur in a car accident last week.
The vehicle Nehrling was driving was involved in a collision with a bus in his hometown of Peterborough, Ontario last Friday morning as he was in route to pick up his father who was camping. Nehrling's Ford Explorer spun out near a sharp turn on a wet road before being hit by the bus. He was the only person in his vehicle at the time of the accident. The jaws of life were used by emergency personnel to extract Nehrling from his vehicle.
A titanium rod was later inserted into Nehrling's thigh during surgery. It is expected to be at least five months before Nehrling is able to begin a rehabilitation program for his injury.
"We're sorry that Lucas will probably not be able to play this season, but we are extremely thankful that he's alive," said IceHawks Vice President Lori Shaver.
Nehrling, a fourth-round selection (104th overall) of the New Jersey Devils in 1997 NHL Entry Draft, split time between the IceHawks and the Albany River Rats of the American Hockey League (AHL) during the last two seasons. The 6'5", 225-pound defenseman accumulated three points (1-2) and 189 penalty minutes in 24 games with Adirondack last season.
Cards and letters can be sent to the IceHawks' office for forwarding to Nehrling. The address for the IceHawks' office is 1 Civic Center Plaza, Glens Falls, NY 12801.
