Nebraska Danger News Release
GRAND ISLAND, NE - The Danger return to Grand Island on Friday night for a game against the Bemidji Axemen with kickoff at 7:00 PM. The Axemen are coming off a tough loss to the Titans last week. Bemidji was able to grab the lead with just over two minutes to go in the game, but Cedar Rapids answered back with a 26-yard touchdown pass with under a minute remaining in order to get the 39-36 victory.
The Danger pulled out a very tough road win last Saturday against the Iowa Barnstormers, 33-16. The Danger were without 2013 IFL MVP quarterback Jameel Sewell while he was at a tryout for the Canadian Football League.
Back-up quarterback Bryan Parnes got the start for the Danger at quarterback and quickly made the most of his opportunity. Parnes threw for three touchdowns and rushed for another in the first half to help the Danger gain a 26-3 lead heading into halftime.
For a team that is notorious for starting games slowly, taking a 23-point lead into the halftime break was a big change for the Danger.
"Having that much of a lead at halftime was exactly what we would always like to do," said Danger coach Mike Davis. "Parnes came in and did exactly what we needed him to do. He is a very smart player and you could see how much he had learned from watching Jameel for six games."
Iowa finally got their offense on track in the second half to close the lead to 26-10. On the ensuing drive, Parnes scrambled to pick up a first down, but was hit head-first into a dasher board and was forced to leave the field on a stretcher. He was unable to return to game, but was cleared from the hospital later that night.
Running back Waymon James came in at quarterback for the Danger and busted a run for a 25-yard touchdown. From there, it was all about the Danger defense holding on for the win and running out the clock on offense.
The Danger defense buckled down and only allowed a single score from that point on. Both teams were shut out in the fourth quarter to seal the victory for the Danger.
"Our defense played lights out," Davis said. "Harcourt Farquharson pulled in two huge interceptions in the fourth quarter and our defensive line was all over their quarterback all night."
The quarterback situation for the Danger is still to be determined for Friday's game against the Axemen.
Kickoff is set for 7 pm on Friday night at the Heartland Events Center. Doors open at 6:00 with pre-game activities beginning at 6:30. It is mascot night, so kids are encouraged to come meet and take a photo with one of the many mascots featured at the game!
Tickets for Friday night are available at area Pump & Pantry stores, the Heartland Events Center Box Office, or via Ticketmaster. The game will be broadcast live on 2DayFM 103.1, or streamed live at www.2dayfm1031.com
