NEW YORK, N.Y., March 24, 2002 â North Charleston Lowgators' guard Fred House has been named the National Basketball Development League's Rookie of the Year for the 2001-02 inaugural season, it was announced today.
"Fred's intensity and enthusiasm set him apart from his peers as he helped provide leadership to the Lowgators this season," said NBDL Executive Director Karl Hicks. "He should be very proud of all he has accomplished. His future is quite bright."
"Fred is one of the top defenders in the league and all accolades are well deserved," said North Charleston Lowgators head coach Alex English. "He worked hard to improve his game throughout the season and is clearly a better player now."
House, a sixth round (46th overall) selection in the 2001 NBDL Inaugural Draft out of Southern Utah (2001), averaged a team-leading 13.4 ppg on .458 (268-585 FGA) shooting along with 4.5 rpg, 2.5 spg and 1.8 apg over 25.8 mpg starting all 56 games. House led the NBDL in steals (2.5 spg) and finished 13th in scoring (13.4 ppg).
House played two seasons at Southern Utah after two years at Dixie Junior College in Texas. He was a two-time All-Mid-Continent Conference first team selection at Southern Utah, and earned All-Region and All-America Honorable Mention as a freshman at Dixie. As a senior, House started all 31 games and led the team in scoring 15 times. He averaged 17.8 ppg and 5.9 rpg and was ranked fifth in the nation in steals (3.0 spg). House was named Mid-Continent Tournament MVP after scoring 66 points in three games, and scored 21 points against Boston College in the NCAA Tournament.
"Fred has worked extremely hard developing his skills throughout the season becoming one of the league's top open court scorers and an excellent defender," said North Charleston Lowgators assistant coach Doug Marty. "He brings a positive spirit and energy to the game that inspires both his teammates and the fans."
Other top votegetters for the NBDL's Rookie of the Year Award were Asheville Altitude forward Lee Scruggs, Fayetteville Patriots guard Omar Cook and forward Greg Stempin, Greenville Groove forward Rahim Lockhart and Huntsville Flight guard Mike Wilks.
