Fort Worth Flyers News Release

FORT WORTH, Texas, Aug. 3 -- The NBA Development League team in Fort Worth announced today that its nickname will be the "Flyers". The Flyers' nickname not only makes reference to the community's vast aerospace industry, but also speaks to the tremendous growth of the Fort Worth marketplace, in particular the revitalization of downtown. The logo, featuring a capitalized flying letter "F" with a basketball backdrop, gives the team its new identity.

"Tonight's event will prove to be an historic evening for the city of Fort Worth," said team president Todd Speer. "We are so proud to become ingrained into the fabric of the Fort Worth community and the launch party tips things off just right."

"As a sports fan, I'm excited about this addition to the growing number of professional sporting events calling Fort Worth home," Fort Worth Mayor Mike Moncrief said. "And, as Mayor of this city, I'm equally as excited about this outstanding partnership. Having the NBA's D-League as Fort Worth's newest sports teammate holds terrific promise for positive economic impact, as well as community enrichment through the League's established tradition of community involvement."

Game uniforms featuring the team nickname (Flyers) on home jerseys and the city name (Fort Worth) on road uniforms will be unveiled at a later date. In addition to the distinctive D-League and individual team logos embroidered on the uniform, an NBA team logo will be affixed to the jersey of a player who is assigned to the Flyers to help identify his NBA affiliation.

The Flyers tip off their home opener Wednesday, Nov. 23 against the Tulsa 66ers beginning at 7 p.m. at the Fort Worth Convention Center. The inaugural season begins with back-to-back road games on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 18-19, beginning with the Roanoke Dazzle followed by the Fayetteville Patriots.

"We're planning quite a party for our home opening weekend," stated Speer.

Known as the city "Where the West Begins," Fort Worth, Texas has a deep cowboy heritage memorialized in American folklore by cattle drives, stockyards and oil barons. But since 1977, Fort Worth has moved forward with a high-flying revitalization that features a modern city with major interstate highways, an attractive skyline and new cultural attractions. Fort Worth is also home to various companies in the aerospace industry including American Airlines, Lockheed Martin and Bell Helicopter Textron Inc.

Fort Worth has benefited greatly from the revitalization of its central business district. Saluted by the National League of Cities (NLC) in 1994 with the James C. Howland Award for Urban Enrichment, downtown Fort Worth has re-emerged as an exciting and attractive place for tourists. The historic downtown architecture has been restored in a 20-block district, now called Sundance Square, and the rebuilding and landscaping of Main Street with red bricks, reminiscent of its original paving, helps to expand the city's appeal as a premier destination.

The team's home court, the Fort Worth Convention Center, underwent $75 million worth of enhancements and expansion, which were completed in 2003. Omni Hotel Management, Inc. will break ground in 2006 for a 600-room convention center headquarters hotel and parking garage. The city's skyline has changed dramatically in the last two years with the additions of Radio Shack and Pier 1's corporate headquarters. Reconstruction is underway on Lancaster Avenue, a catalyst project for redevelopment in the southern end of the central business district.

The NBA Development League will tip off its fifth season on November 18, 2005. The league includes the Fayetteville Patriots (N.C.), Florida Flame (Ft. Myers), Roanoke Dazzle (Va.), Arkansas RimRockers (Little Rock), as well as Albuquerque (N.M.), Tulsa (Okla.) and Austin and Fort Worth (Texas).

The D-League offers players the opportunity to develop their talent in a highly competitive atmosphere under the NBA's umbrella. Thirty-four (34) players have been called up to the NBA on 50 separate occasions. Ten (10) former D-League coaches, five athletic trainers, 11 referees and 29 front office executives have also been called up since the start of the league's inaugural season in November 2001.

Designed to help grow the sport of basketball both domestically and internationally, the league also offers fun, family entertainment at affordable prices. The D-League is a source of on-court talent for the NBA's 30 teams and is a diverse human resources pool for the NBA and its teams by training employees in management, operations, public relations, sales and marketing positions.
