NBA D-League Update

March 13, 2012 - NBA G League (G League) News Release

VETERAN HELP FOR HIRE

Mikki Moore is still about 47 trips to White Castle short of having the requisite beef to impact an NBA game at the tender age of 36. That doesn't mean he can't, in a pinch, provide spot minutes off the bench for a team that's a little "thin" across the front line.

Moore, who as recently as 2007-08, appeared in 82 games for the Sacramento Kings, is averaging 11.7 points and 7.8 rebounds in 24 games with the Idaho Stampede.

The classic underdog who overcame a glaring lack of strength to carve out a 12-year NBA career as a reserve big and solid locker room guy, Moore knows the NBA ropes, and would be an easy fix for a team that needs a body in the coming weeks.

Jamario Moon, an NBA rotation player over the last four seasons, is another veteran hoping to use the NBA Development League as a springboard to another stint in the NBA. Moon broke into the NBA in 2007 with the Toronto Raptors, and immediately looked like a player who might hang around a while. He averaged 8.5 points and 6.2 rebounds as a rookie, and even took part in the 2008 Rookie Challenge at All-Star Weekend in New Orleans.

His career leveled off the past two seasons, and he wasn't picked up at the start of this season, eventually signing to play in the NBA D-League. In three games with the D-Fenders, Moon is averaging 18.3 points, 8.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists.

Like Moore, Antonio Daniels was an NBA fixture for over a decade, and even got a late call-up from the Philadelphia 76ers last season. Daniels, more of athletic combo guard during his time in the NBA, has become one of the most prolific assist men in the NBA D-League, averaging 8.2 assists, to go with 12.1 points in 13 games for the Texas Legends.

Some other NBA veterans in this category include Dan Gadzuric, Antoine Walker, Morris Almond, Orien Greene, Kareem Rush and Quinton Ross.

PROSPECT REPORT

Damian Saunders, Rio Grande Valley Vipers -- If Saunders had come along 10 years ago, when pace of play in the NBA was slowly grinding to a halt, he almost certainly would have been drafted as a versatile wing defender with a knack for getting steals and blocks, and playing with great energy. As the game has loosened up, and teams have placed more of an emphasis on shooting and scoring from the wing, the need for bump-and-grind players, while still there, isn't as high as it once was. Saunders, the Defensive Player of the Year in the Atlantic 10 as a senior in 2010-11, struggles as a perimeter shooter and is not a great ball-handler. He is an exceptional defender and a willing rebounder and shotblocker for his size (6-7), and this combination should continue to earn him hard looks from NBA teams. In 23 games this season, 11.2 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.5 blocks and 1.6 steals.
