Northern Arizona Suns News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - The Northern Arizona Suns announced today they have hired a new broadcast team for their 2019-20 campaign, adding Jordan Byrd as their play-by-play broadcaster and Tom Kuyper as their color commentator.
Byrd and Kuyper will team up for the first time on Nov. 9 at 5 p.m. for Sparklight Opening Night, as the Suns face off against the Agua Caliente Clippers at the Findlay Toyota Center. However, neither are brand new to the NAZ Suns broadcast. Byrd filled in for a few games for former play-by-play broadcaster Jon Bloom during the team's first two seasons, and Kuyper joined Bloom on the broadcast at the tail-end of last season.
Byrd has a wealth of radio and team broadcast experience in Arizona. For the last 10 years, he has been a part of Bonneville's Phoenix stations, spending the last six years as the producer of the Burns & Gambo Show on 98.7 FM Arizona's Sports Station. Since 2014, Byrd has also served as an on-air host at the same station, regularly leading Arizona Sports Saturday. The last three seasons, he has been a fill-in host for Phoenix Suns postgame shows on 98.7 FM, as well.
Northern Arizona should be familiar with Byrd, especially the Prescott Valley area, where he's been on the broadcast for the Arizona Sundogs hockey team. Byrd spent over a decade (2005-17) calling Northern Arizona University sporting events, primarily women's soccer, women's volleyball and women's basketball. The Flagstaff, Arizona, native and former Lumberjack himself also contributed to broadcasts for football and men's basketball games.
Kuyper will be the NAZ Suns' color commentator during Friday, Saturday and Sunday home games. He has been a staple in the Valley, spending the last 20 years broadcasting Arizona State University sports on TV and radio, while also spending the last 10 years doing broadcasts for various Arizona high schools. He has multiple years of experience broadcasting Grand Canyon University sports, a year with ESPN2, and even has worked a couple of Phoenix Suns games as a sideline reporter.
Kuyper is a former Arizona State men's basketball player, a four-year letterman from 1979-83, who played alongside ASU greats Fat Lever, Byron Scott and Alton Lister. He went on to play professionally in France before returning to Arizona, where he coached 15 years of college basketball, including a long stint at then-Arizona Bible College, and three years of high school basketball.
Season tickets start as low as $9 per game for the Northern Arizona Suns. Benefits include exclusive team events, discounts on team gear, playoff priority and free Phoenix Suns tickets. For more information about the 24-game package, visit nazsuns.com/memberships or call 928-772-SUNS.
