Navigators open training camp

November 1, 2005 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Tacoma Navigators News Release

Tacoma, WA. The ABA Tacoma Navigators professional basketball team opened training camp on Monday at the Boys & Girls Club of Tacoma with seventeen hopefuls working out under the direction of Head Coach and former NBA and Seattle Sonics star Vincent Askew. Making his Navigator debut was Rashid Byrd, a 7'2" center/forward who became the first player in team history to sign a contract with the 2005-2006 ABA expansion team. Byrd, a Tacoma resident, was recently released by the Sonics. Seattle player personnel director, David Pendergraff described the 22-year old star-in-the-making as a "big kid who can run the court and score. Not ready yet for the NBA, but certainly has the potential."

Byrd was introduced to the public at a celebration of the "Save Our Dome" Committee at the Exhibition Hall at the Tacoma Dome last week. The committee ran the successful "Yes on Prop 1" ballot measure that garnered 61% of the vote in last month's election. The measure would have renewed the 25-year old bonds retired this month, which originally financed construction of the Tacoma Dome, the largest wood dome in the world. But although Prop 1 surpassed the required super majority of 60%, it did not enjoy enough voter turnout to validate the election. The measure will be re-introduced by the Tacoma City Council on Tuesday, November 1st.
