From the Notes
Wes Benjamin: 25-year-old Wes Benjamin starts for the Sounds tonight. The left-hander is making his 21st appearance (20th start) of the season and is 4-5 with a 6.49 ERA while covering 94.1 innings. Benjamin has yielded 114 hits and 44 walks to go with his 80 strikeouts. His last outing was on July 24 in a start versus Oklahoma City. He allowed 5 earned runs on 6 hits and 2 walks while striking out 6 batters. The 6 punchouts were one-shy of his season-high. Benjamin spent the majority of his 2018 season with Double-A Frisco where he went 5-6 with a 3.62 ERA in 15 starts. The southpaw spent nearly two months on the disabled list from June 7-July 31 with a left elbow strain. Despite missing time, Benjamin led the Frisco staff in wins and ranked among team leaders in strikeouts (3rd), starts (T3rd) and innings (4th). In his minor league career, Benjamin is 25-23 with a 4.36 ERA while covering 82 games (78 starts). The Rangers drafted the Illinois native in the 5th round of the 2014 MLB Draft out of Kansas University.
A Familiar Face: El Paso starter Dillon Overton played one season with Nashville in 2016 when he was in Oakland's organization. He went 13-5 with a 3.29 ERA in 21 games (20 starts). He ranked among league leaders in wins (3rd) and ERA (5th), leading Nashville in both categories. Overton won the PCL Pitcher of the Week for the week of April 18-24.
The Chihuahua Invasion: The El Paso Chihuahuas have the second-most road wins in minor league baseball with 38. They trail Texas Rangers affiliate Down East of the Adavanced-A Carolina League, who has 39 road wins. The Sounds ranked tied-for-14th in the PCL in home wins with 21, matching Oklahoma City and leading Memphis (17).
A July to Remember: Outfielder Scott Heineman is hitting .408 (29-for-71) with 19 runs scored, 2 doubles, 1 triple, 4 home runs, 10 RBI and 10 walks in the month of July. Heineman's .408 average currently ranks 3rd among Nashville Sounds in a single month in the Pacific Coast League era (1998-present, minimum 75 plate appearances). Heineman trails only Vinny Rottino's .420 average in August of 2006 and Corey Hart's average of .413 in June of 2005.
Giving it Extra: With Saturday's 4-2 in 10 innings over New Orleans, the Sounds are now 2-3 in extra-innings games on the season. The last extra-innings game was on May 29 versus Round Rock, when Nashville lost 13-12 in 13 innings. That is a 52-game gap, as opposed to the first four extra-inning games in the first 53 games.
Closing Time: David Carpenter recorded his 18th save Saturday night at New Orleans. He has yet to blow a save this season. He leads the PCL and all of Triple-A baseball in saves, with New Orleans' RJ Alvarez in 2nd with 13. Carpenter ranks tied-for-fifth in all of minor league baseball in saves. His 18 saves ranks tied-for-ninth in franchise history for a single season (Milt Hill, 1992; Luther Hackman, 2007). He can also crack the top 10 in franchise career leaders if he reaches 23 saves. If Carpenter ends as the league leader in saves, he would be the 4th to do so in Sounds history: Chris Smith, 2010 (26); Mark Corey, 2003 (30); Jon Pacella, 1986 (17).
