Nashville SC Looks to Continue Trend of Results Following Two-Goal Losses

April 25, 2019 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Nashville SC News Release

NASHVILLE - Nashville Soccer Club suffered just its fifth-ever two-goal loss last Saturday. A 3-1 defeat to Charleston Battery at MUSC Health Stadium halted Nashville's two-match winning streak and 215-minute shutout streak. Now that it has passed, how will Nashville SC respond? Let's look back at last season and see how NSC fared in games following a two-goal defeat.

March 17, 2018 - Louisville City FC 2, Nashville SC 0

March 24, 2018 - Nashville SC 0, Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC 0

The inaugural professional season for Nashville SC started with a two-goal losses at defending USL Cup champions Louisville City FC in the season opener. Nashville responded at home in first USL home match, holding the Pittsburgh Riverhounds to a 0-0 draw at Nissan Stadium on a rainy March evening. While Nashville didn't score, its defense had a bounce back performance and established itself as one of the league's best defenses.

June 26, 2018 - Nashville SC 0, Indy Eleven 2

June 30, 2018 - Nashville SC 3, Atlanta United 0

Hosting Indy Eleven, Nashville posted its worst home performance in club history, falling by two goals at home for the first and only time. The following match against Atlanta United 2 was a complete 180-degree flip, as Nashville scored three goals and posted its largest margin of victory at the time.

July 21, 2018 - Ottawa Fury FC 2, Nashville SC 0

July 25, 2018 - Nashville SC 1, Atlanta United 2 0

Nashville went north of the border last season and experienced one of its most heartbreaking losses, conceding twice in stoppage time to fall to Ottawa Fury FC 2-0. Just four days later, back at First Tennessee Park, defender Taylor Washington scored a late match winner against Atlanta United 2 to give Nashville an important win to stop a two-match losing skid.

July 28, 2018 - Toronto FC II 2, Nashville SC 0

August 4, 2018 - FC Cincinnati 1, Nashville SC 1

Despite the win against Atlanta in after NSC's loss to Ottawa, it turned around and suffered its second two-goal defeat in three games at the hands of previously winless Toronto FC II. It was one of the worst performances of the season for Nashville. One week later, Nashville traveled to league-best FC Cincinnati and fought back from an early deficit to draw the best offense in the league. It was an encouraging sign for the club and started it on an end of the season run that saw Nashville get results in 11 of the final 14 matches to earn a playoff berth.

But...What does it mean?

Nashville has lost four times previously by two goals or more, and each time earned a significant result in the following match. That is credit to head coach Gary Smith for identifying problems and immediately correcting course. Nashville is 2-0-2 in those four follow-up matches. The club drew fellow playoff clubs Pittsbugh Riverhounds SC and FC Cincinnati and beat Atlanta United 2 at home twice.

If history is any indication, Nashville will be very ready for this weekend's match against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, and will look to continue the trend of following up a two-goal loss with a very good result.
