Nashville SC Looks to Continue Dominance of ATL UTD 2 on Saturday
May 3, 2019 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Nashville SC News Release
NASHVILLE - Last season, two southern cities on the rise in the soccer world met three times, and Nashville owned each and every one of those matchups.
This weekend, Nashville Soccer Club will reunite with Atlanta United 2 at Fifth Third Bank Stadium in Atlanta, and the Boys in Gold will look to continue a run of form against Atlanta that included three wins in 2018 by a combined score of 6-0.
Here's a look back at Nashville's three victories over ATL UTD 2 last season:
June 30, 2018: Nashville SC 3-0 Atlanta United 2, First Tennessee Park
In the first-ever meeting between the two sides, Nashville earned a comfortable 3-0 win at First Tennessee Park. Nashville struck first in the 19' minute as forward Brandon Allen got on the business end of a perfect Alan Winn cross right in front of the goal. Allen nearly had a second goal a few minutes later, but both the first chance and rebound opportunity couldn't get past the Atlanta keeper.
Winn would get one of his own as the first half was winding down on a great counterattack feed from Lebo Moloto. Atlanta would find chances in the second half and ended up outshooting Nashville 12-11 in this one, but they couldn't find the back of the net. Moloto would seal the deal with a wide-open shot at the top of the box capped off with an emphatic "Shoot" dance celebration.
July 25, 2018: Nashville SC 1-0 Atlanta United 2, First Tennessee Park
The month of July wasn't kind to Nashville SC, as a 0-0 home draw against FC Cincinnati led into road losses against Charlotte Independence and Ottawa Fury FC. The club looked to get back to form at home against an ATL UTD 2 side that boasted more MLS talent than their first meeting, including forward Romario Williams and goalkeeper Mitch Hildebrandt.
Atlanta dominated possession for much of the match and had a few solid opportunities on goal. However, it was Nashville that found the only breakthrough in the 80' minute when Ish Jome laid a cross through the box for Taylor Washington, who scored the goal into the open cage. The win preserved Nashville's stellar run of form at home, as they had only lost once at First Tennessee Park to that point.
September 26, 2018: Atlanta United 2 0-2 Nashville SC, Coolray Field
Nashville SC rounded out its season series against ATL UTD 2 with a 2-0 win on a September Wednesday night on the road. Like the second meeting, Atlanta was the more dominant side in possession, owning more than 60% throughout the match. However, Nashville started the match on the front foot as Ropapa Mensah buried a rebound in the 7' minute to go up 1-0. Nashville SC goalkeeper Matt Pickens made a couple of key stops before halftime to preserve the lead.
In the second half, Atlanta continued to dominate possession, but once again it was Nashville that found the back of the net. Tucker Hume made a long run to clean up a rebound in front of goal to double Nashville's advantage and seal the match.
