Nashville SC Learns Potential Third Round U.S. Open Cup Opponents
May 14, 2019 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Nashville SC News Release
NASHVILLE - On Tuesday morning, U.S. Soccer unveiled the potential pairings and host scenarios for the Third Round of the 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
Should Nashville Soccer Club defeat South Georgia Tormenta 2 in the Second Round on Tuesday night in Murfreesboro, the Boys in Gold would face the winner of the match between Charleston Battery of the USL Championship and Greenville Triumph SC of USL League One. The Third Round match would take place on May 29 at 7:30 PM at Hayes Stadium on the campus of MTSU in Murfreesboro.
Charleston Battery sit in sixth place in the USL Championship standings with a 4-1-4 record. Nashville has already faced Charleston once this season, losing 3-1 on the road at MUSC Health Stadium. Greenville Triumph SC is an expansion club playing in the inaugural season of USL League One, the new third-division league in the U.S. Soccer pyramid. The club currently sits in sixth place in the league with a 2-3-2 record.
A random selection process among those teams who applied determined the hosts. Clubs with a venue meeting minimum tournament requirements were given priority. To determine potential Third Round matchups, pairs of Second Round games were bracketed together geographically. Second Round games that did not have a logical geographic match were pooled and drawn randomly to determine the Third Round possibilities for these sides.
The Third Round winners will face Division I Major League Soccer (MLS) clubs in the fourth round on June 11 and 12.
Tickets are still available for Tuesday night's Second Round matchup against South Georgia Tormenta 2 at Hayes Stadium in Murfreesboro. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM. All U.S. Open Cup matches are streamed exclusively on ESPN+.
