Nailers Re-Sign Zack Torquato
September 4, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, are excited to announce their ninth player signing of the 2015 offseason. Wheeling has re-signed forward Zack Torquato to an ECHL contract.
Torquato, 26, has become a fixture in the City of Wheeling, both on the ice and in the community, as he will be entering his fifth season as a member of the Nailers. Last season, Zack became the fifth player in team history to appear in 200 career games, and currently sits only 26 contests away from breaking the team record shared by Stefan Brannare and Cliff Loya (231). The Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario native has finished in the top five in team scoring during each of his four previous seasons with the club, which included career highs in goals (19) and points (59) in 2014-15. Torquato will enter the 2015-16 campaign with career totals of 54 goals, 124 assists, 178 points, and 310 penalty minutes in 206 games with Wheeling.
"Zack is a character guy for our organization, who is good for the young players, and does a lot off of the ice, making him popular with the fans," said Nailers Head Coach Clark Donatelli. "He is a dynamic threat every time he is on the ice, consistently putting up big numbers, and he does a great job of making everyone around him better."
In addition to his time with the Nailers, Zack has also seen action in the American Hockey League in five of the last eight seasons, including 18 games with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in 2013-14, and another 12 games with the AHL Pens this past year. Overall, Torquato has appeared in 316 professional games with six different teams. Prior to making the jump to the pro game, he spent parts of five seasons in the Ontario Hockey League, suiting up with the Saginaw Spirit and Erie Otters. Zack's performance in the OHL led him to be a sixth round selection (178th overall) by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.
"Wheeling has become a second home for me, and I am looking forward to getting back there soon to see all of our great fans," Torquato said. "On the ice, we have a lot of returning players, keeping our core group together, which makes me very excited about our potential to achieve something special this year."
The Wheeling Nailers will begin the 24th season in team history with a two-game series in Norfolk on October 16th and 17th, before WesBanco Arena opens its doors for the home opener on October 24th against Brampton at 7:35.
