June 20, 2015 - National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) News Release
CHICAGO (June 20, 2015) - Nadine Angerer leads No. 1-ranked Germany into the knockout rounds of the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup when they face Sweden at 4 p.m. ET in the Round of 16 at Lansdowne Stadium in Ottawa.
The Portland Thorns FC goalkeeper registered her second shutout of the tournament as Germany recorded a 4-0 victory over Thailand in their final game of the group stage to top Group B.
The Europeans registered a tournament-best +14 goal difference in the opening three games while winning their group. For their troubles, Germany has drawn Sweden - the No. 5-ranked team in the world - in the Round of 16 after the Scandinavians finished third in Group D behind the United States and Australia.
Angerer was in goal for the most recent meeting between the two countries - a 2-1 victory for the Germans in the third-place match at the Algarve Cup on March 11. However, this game came just seven days after the Swedes put four past Angerer in a 4-2 win over Germany in the group stage at the tournament.
Sweden holds a 2-1-0 record all-time against Germany at the World Cup, but the last of their victories over the two-time World Cup champions came almost 20 years ago at the 1995 tournament.
Additionally, Germany won the most recent World Cup encounter between the two sides - when Nia Künzer scored the game-winning goal in sudden-death extra-time of the 2003 World Cup Final at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. to hand the Germans a 2-1 victory and their first World Cup title.
The winner of the match Saturday will advance to face the victor of the game between France and Korea Republic. The quarterfinal, like the Round of 16 match between Germany and Sweden, will be held at Olympic Stadium in Montreal.
