Mystic Schooners Fall 8-5
SANFORD - The Mystic Schooners fell 8-5 to the Sanford Mainers at Goodall Park Friday night. The loss was just their second to a Northern Division team in eight games.
Both teams had trouble defensively in the first inning. The Schooners scored their first run when Toby Handley led the game off with a fly ball to right center that was dropped to allow Handley to take second. A few batters later Brett Bond singled with a line drive to right field to bring around Handley to put the Schooners up 1-0 at the end of the top of the first.
The Schooners gave committed two errors of their own in the bottom of the first to allow the Mainers to tie the game at one run at the end of the first.
The Mainers brought out the power bats, starting in the second inning Sanford would hit three home runs in three consecutive innings. Jordan Powell started it off with a solo shot in the second, Shaine Hughes blasted a two run homer in the third and Todd Czinege capped it off with another solo home run in the fourth. When all was said and done the Mainers led the game 5-1 at the end of four innings.
The Schooners would battle back and tie it up. They started in the fifth when Casey Baker singled to lead off the inning. Two outs later with Baker in scoring position Chase Lunceford singled him in to make it a three run game.
Mystic would get those three runs back on one swing of the bat in the seventh. With two outs and Toby Handley and Nick Mascelli on base, Chase Lunceford launched his fourth home run of the season over the right field fence to tie the game at five heading into the home half of the seventh.
The Mainers, who finished with seven extra base hits took the lead right back in the seventh and they scored two more times in the eighth to bring the score to 8-5 and put the game out of reach.
With the loss the Schooners record drops to 14-11 on the season and they are now two games behind the first place Ocean State Waves in the Southern Division.
The Schooners will take on the Waves Saturday at Old Mountain Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30.
