Myrtle Beach Pelicans Game Notes
July 2, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
The Pelicans begin their longest road trip of the season, a ten-day, three-city trek that begins tonight in Lynchburg against the Hillcats. First pitch at City Stadium is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
LHP Miguel De Los Santos (0-0, 0.00) at LHP Chris Masters (4-3, 3.26)
ANYTHING BUT AVERAGE: The Pelicans boast five players that rank in the Carolina League's top 15 in batting average. Ryan Strausborger ranks fourth in the loop with a .294 mark and injured third baseman Mike Olt still qualifies for seventh at .286 until July 8. Second baseman Santiago Chirino cracked the top ten at .275 while Leury Garcia ranks 13th (.271) and Jared Prince is 15th (.270). As a team, the Pelicans' .263 clip is the best in the league, two points ahead of tonight's opponent, Lynchburg. The Hillcats have four of the top 15 hitters, Andrelton Simmons (.293, 5th), Adam Milligan (.286, 6th), Phil Gosselin (.282, 9th) and Todd Cunningham (.273, 11th).
ROB-BED OF A WIN: Robbie Ross was outstanding once again last night, tossing six shutout innings for the second consecutive start. The reigning Pitcher of the Week was in line to add to his league-leading win total, but was denied his ninth of the season when the bullpen blew a 3-0 lead in the 5-3 loss. The lefty now has company atop the leaderboard as Frederick's Bobby Bundy picked up his eighth win last night. Ross lowered his ERA to 2.49, the fifth-lowest in the circuit while throwing the third-most innings (90.1).
BITTER PILL: After a ten-inning, walk-off win on Wednesday, the Pelicans lost back-to-back nailbiters to drop their three-game set against Kinston. It marked only the second time in 12 tries this season that an opponent has come to Myrtle Beach and taken a series from the Pelicans. Lynchburg won two out of three at BB&T Coastal Field from May 13-15. Even with the two recent losses, the Birds still enjoy the Carolina League's best home record with a 26-12 mark.
HOME COOKIN': Vinny DiFazio walked in his first three trips to the plate last night, extending his league-best home on-base streak to 18 games, spanning the entire 2011 season. Leury Garcia secomd-inning single ran his home streak to 15 games, during which he's batted .409 (27-66). That stretch is the third-longest home streak in the league this year, also trailing Ryan Strausborger's 16-gamer from May 14 to June 24.
âPAI' IN THE SKY: David Paisano has climbed over the Mendoza Line with a five-game hitting streak this week. The Cumana, Venezuela native is 9-for-21 (.429) during the streak with a double, a triple and three RBIs. Paisano has posted three three-hit games out of his last ten and is batting .356 (16-45) since June 12, raising his average from .151 to .229.
