Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa - John Mustard recorded the first Waterloo Black Hawks hat trick of the season on Saturday, leading to his selection on Monday as the United States Hockey League's Forward of the Week.
Each time Mustard scored in the matchup against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, the Black Hawks went ahead. He notched the game's first goal just over one minute into the first period. It was the second time this season Mustard has scored an opening goal and the eighth time Waterloo has taken a 1-0 lead. Then in the third period, he broke a 2-2 tie making it his second multigoal game of the season. Mustard added one more at 1:26 of overtime, lifting the Hawks to a 4-3 win. It was his team-leading third game-winning goal of the season, not counting an additional shootout-winning conversion at Dubuque in late September.
The win, coupled with a Thanksgiving night victory over Cedar Rapids, has pushed the Hawks to a four-game winning streak. Waterloo is also now a season-best two games over .500.
Mustard is the Hawks' leading goal-scorer (11) and tied for the team's point lead (20). He also has a team-best eight power play points and 50 shots on goal. Those marks put him at or near the top, relative to all other USHL rookies. He paces the cohort in points, goals, and power play points, while ranking second in shots and tying for third in assists (nine).
He is committed to the Providence Friars hockey program and was a "W" prospect on the National Hockey League Central Scouting Players to Watch List released in October.
Mustard joins Jakub Altrichter as the second Waterloo player to be recognized as a USHL Forward of the Week this season. Altrichter won the award on October 16th.
The Black Hawks are home on Friday against the Sioux Falls Stampede at 7:05 p.m. It's Kid Take Over the Rink Night. For seats, call the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office or visit tickets.waterlooblackhawks.com.
