Great Falls Voyagers News Release
BILLINGS, Mont. (September 1, 2014) - The Great Falls Voyagers held a 1-0 lead heading into the ninth, but could not complete the shutout as the Billings Mustangs scored twice to earn a 2-1 walk-off victory Monday afternoon at Dehler Park.
After getting the final two outs of the eighth, Matt Cooper (4-2) came back on for the ninth for the Voyagers (15-20, 38-35). With one out, Argenis Aldazoro hit his 11th homer of the year off the righty to tie the game. Aristides Aquino then followed with a triple, and after Taylor Sparks was walked, Kevin Franklin hit a sacrifice fly to center to send the home fans home happy.
The story throughout the ball game was pitching on both sides. For Great Falls, Kelvis Valerio was excellent in his second outing with the club, shutting out the Mustangs (22-13, 39-34) on five hits over six innings to earn his first quality start for the Voyagers.
On the other side, Billings starter Tyler Mahle was good as well, allowing one run on five hits in five frames of work.
The only run off Mahle came in the third. Ryan Jones gave Great Falls a 1-0 lead, starting the frame with a solo home run, his third blast of the year.
The Voyagers finish up their road trip Tuesday with their final regular season meeting with the Billings Mustangs at Dehler Park. Great Falls will send righty Matt Ball (3-6, 7.26) to the mound, while Billings will counter with fellow right-hander Luke Moran (5-5, 4.73). First pitch is set for 7:05 and coverage will begin at 6:50 on 1400 AM KXGF and gfvoyagers.com.
