December 29, 2008 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Southeast Texas Mavericks News Release

The Southeast Texas Mustangs (7-1) won again on the road on Sunday night vs the Texas City Rangers (0-2). The Mustangs have now won 3 games in a row on the road and 6 games in a row overall as they continue to be the hottest team in the ABA right now.

Southeast Texas got off to a slow start in the first quarter and found themselves down by 8 early on. But an 18-2 run at the end of the first quarter put them up 33-26 as the first quarter ended. In the second quarter both teams continued their hot shooting as the Mustangs were led by DeRon Rutledge and Currye Todd and the Rangers were led by Silvester Simple and Courtney Captain. Southeast Texas led 64-51 at the half.

In the third quarter the Mustangs bench helped them extend their lead to twenty as pressure defense got to Texas City and the Rangers had several forced turnovers. Todd, Brian Burrell, Jerry Williams, Boo Richardson and newcomer Antonio Lawrence led charge in the Mustangs third quarter run. The Mustangs led by a score of 94-73 heading into the last quarter of play.

In the fourth quarter Texas City cut the Mustangs lead to 15 with 5:32 to play, but after a timeout and a basket by Rutledge the Mustangs extended their lead back to 19 points and went on the claim the important road win 114-95.

The Mustangs once again had five players in double figure scoring! Rutledge led the way with 26 points and 15 rebounds as he continues his MVP caliber play this season. Rookie sensation Todd followed up with 16 points and 5 rebounds, while Harris chipped in 15 points off the Mustangs bench. Mustangs point guard Tim Pledger and Burrell scored 13 points apiece respectively. Also, Mustangs center Alvin Jefferson had 11 rebounds and 5 blocked shots. The Texas City Rangers were led by Simple's 27 points and 13 rebounds. Captain scored 16 long range points, and Rangers center Gordon Ward had a double/double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

"It is one of those games that I was concerned about coming back off the holiday break! Our players did what they had to do and it was a good road victory for us. Anytime you can win consistently on the road in professional basketball, you're doing something right. It was a good win for us!" said Mustangs Head Coach Steve Tucker.

The Mustangs and Rangers will meet again on Saturday night, January 3rd back at Brozosport High School in Freeport, TX. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM. The Mustangs next home game will be on Sunday, January 4th at 3:00 PM at Ford Arena vs the Houston Takers.
