Mustangs Split Weekend Homestand

December 9, 2008 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Southeast Texas Mavericks News Release

Beaumont, TX. The ABA Southeast Texas Mustangs opened their inaugural season with two games at home this past weekend. The Mustangs earned a split in the two closely contested games. On Saturday night, the Mustangs defeated the Houston Takers 100-95 and in a short turn-around the Mustangs lost on a last second free throw, 94-93, to the South Texas Showboats.

The Mustangs were dominant at times in both games holding big leads that they did not in the end hold. Against Houston, the Mustangs led by as many as 21 points but had to hold off the Takers to go on to win by five. On Sunday, the Mustangs led by as many as 18 points at one point and by 10 points late in the fourth quarter only to be defeated by the Showboats.

"We have to play better with leads and that is obvious," stated Mustangs Head Coach Steve Tucker. "We're not quite there yet. Physically we have some veteran players struggling with their conditioning. It was really the worst case scenario for us to have two games less than 24 hours apart. I think that showed both physically and mentally at the end of the Showboats game on Sunday. You have to give the Showboats all the credit, for they came into our place and beat us. They played really well down the stretch and we didn't. They have a good team."

Anthony Lumpkin scored 30 points against Houston on Saturday night; DeRon Rutledge and Donald Harris added 20 and 13 points. On Sunday against South Texas, Rutledge led the way with 28, while Lumpkin and Harris chipped in with 13 and 11.

The Mustangs will host Houston at home this Friday, December 12th at 730pm. For more information, call
